I am graduating high school a year early, and have only recenty considered doing a gap year. I found city year and think it's perfect. I really want to do my City Year Program in New York, but am concerned that that particular location may be to hard to get into. My second choice would be Boston, followed by Chicago, Phili and Seattle.

Can someone tell me how competetive the admissions for each location is. I can only apply to one and really want to partake in this program.

City Year itself says that about 1 in 4 are accepted. They're really interested in diversity, so if you are anything other than a white, college-educated female, you'll have a better chance. You also have a better chance if you apply early. The least competitive cities are Cleveland and Detroit.

I know someone who did City Year in NY recently. They are the biggest City Year site so they are going to have the most positions to fill there. He really loved it there and said it was the most difficult but rewarding experience of his life.

My cousin is thinking about applying and he sent me information about applying to give her. He agreed the earlier the better- they have a Feb 15th application deadline coming up soon. They are also having an Open House on Wednesday Feb 6th at 5:30 in the NY office.

I asked my friend for a thorough explanation:

"City Year can be a rewarding experience for some people, particularly those people who have just graduated from high school and are not sure what to do. Many aspects of City Year culture are difficult to grasp, so an open mind is essential to embracing the program. You will work long days with little monetary compensation, so it is best for a person to look at CY as a commitment not a job. That being said...City Year can be difficult for some, but as long as you know what you are getting into...It can be quite rewarding on many levels. Make sure you try to visit the CY site you are applying to OR a site closer to where you live. However, keep in mind that all CY sites are different especially New York, because it is the largest."

Are there any other programs similar to city year where one can spend his/her gap year? Does not have to be year-long. Preferably includes travel to a different country.. I want to expand my horizons!

This may be the only chance in our lives we have the time and freedom to do something like this!
