Forgive me if I put this in the wrong place, I wasn’t certain where it should be. The title is self explanatory. I’m considering a gap year. However, I don’t want to pay thousands of dollars to do it. I’ve struggled to decide what I want to do, but I do know I want to help people. A gap year may help me further those considerations and prevent academic burnout. In the future, politics is a real consideration. Does anyone have any suggestions? I’ve done some research but it’s been difficult telling what programs are legitimate and meaningful as well as safe. I love history, the study of government, politics, music (I play multiple instruments), reading, and writing, but I realize that this is not necessarily what programs require and am happy to look outside those areas, I’ve just heard it’s helpful to look where your passions lie. I would consider domestic and abroad service (fyi I speak very basic French), or even trying to start something of my own. If anyone has an idea, or clear guidance, I’d be extremely grateful.
Best wishes
Look at america corps or city year both have programs that are paid for gap years and sound interesting also internships in dc might be easier to get during the year another option if you live outdoors is sca
You could volunteer for a campaign or referendum item until November.
found links for AmeriCorps http://www.nationalservice.gov/programs/americorps
student conservation corps http://www.thesca.org/serve/young-adult-programs
city year http://www.cityyear.org/
all three interesting and take HS 18 yr old grads or older. they are pd(not much) but you don’t have to pay them and all are service oriented. I believe city year and maybe AmeriCorps also give you money at the end towards college.
you mention history. I know kids are dying to get internships on the hill. I think so much easier to get these coveted prestigious internships on the hill if they are during the school year and not summer
also some schools like middlebury and Hamilton colleges have SPRING ADMISSION. on those colleges website they give ideas for fall "gap " programs. I assume all “legit” which you mentioned you were worried about if the college are listing them on their website
link for Middlebury ideas- http://www.middlebury.edu/admissions/apply/february/febresources
Hamilton cut and paste of ideas for gap (many overlap ideas with middlebury and some also that I mentioned including City Year and AmeriCorps)
