Garcia 2019

@kyang8093 SSP, SUMaC, and PROMYS.

I have the applicantion deadline problem too.

Is there a Facebook group for accepted students?

Hello all. I was just waitlisted. Any advice for what I can do now to help my application?

yh me too. As per Garcia Summer Research 2017 thread many waitlist folks were confirmed later. So, hoping…praying… that there is a chance.

@kyang8093 and @justalurker - Please share your profile

I’m a sophomore, SAT in the mid-1500s, little research experience and have done decently in several science olympiads. Nothing too special, but I really wanted to learn more about research and decided to apply to Garcia.

@vicky2019 Did you apply?

Was anyone straight out rejected? Everyone from my school was either accepted or waitlisted. Did they just put everyone who wasn’t rejected on the waitlist? Judging from the email list, it seems like they rejected only a few if any. Also, for those who were accepted, could you guys disclose what you wrote in your essays? From my school, it seems like people with great stats and science ec’s (olympiads, science bowl, science fair) were all waitlisted and people who had good essays but no science experience were accepted. Thanks

I’m just trying to get my 15 posts so I can PM someone :confused: please ignore

can someone who previously attended the GARCIA program PM me, I got accepted but not too sure of joining. I need to understand the research work available

Did anyone on the waitlist get accepted?

My S will be attending Garcia. He also got accepted to BU Rise and HSHSP but likes the materials science focus of Garcia.

Today I was accepted and I am off the waitlist! I cannot wait!

does anyone know the difference between SSP Biochem and Garcia? Which is considered more prestigious?

@cyclowl SSP

@cyclowl if you intend to do individual research for competition, Garcia is probably the better choice. SSP is basically a team project, and not for research competition. in term of prestige, SSP is more prestigious than Garcia.

@JKMSNJ and @dutch18 thanks for your reply! For Garcia, would the seven weeks of research be sufficient for taking to a research competition? I am kind of curious.

In other words, do all students who attend Garcia return home with a finished research for research competitions?

@cyclowl you need to keep in mind: there’s no guaranteed research projects. even for SSP biochemistry projects, you could fail at any step. But the fact is there were many Garcia alumi (i’m sure not everyone) won research competitions in the past. Many projects need to continue even after the program is done though.

Sorry, another question. If I attend SSP biochem this year, do you think it is worth attending Garcia (if accepted) next year? or would material be similar

regarding the independent research project, does it have to be about material sciences or can it have a different focus?
