Gates = End of Search

If I attend a school that only gives need-based aid, does winning the Gates Millennium Scholarship mean I can stop looking for other scholarships?

Yes, but you won't learn if you won the Gates scholarship until about June of senior year, which is long after the deadlines for most other scholarships for entering college freshmen.

As a GMS I can say that Gates is a lifesaver. But you should apply to other scholarships as well because it will be a long while before you find out if you've made it.

I won it already.

You are the only one that can truly answer this question because you know what your financial aid package consists of. If you have not yet been accepted into college, you have no way of knowing for sure what your package is going to be. Remember a school can offer your parents a parent loan for the full cost of your tuition and will have still met your financial need.

Even need based aid may still have work study and a student loan component as part of your aid package. Is your Gates scholarship enough to fully absorb these expenses to the point that you are debt free and will not have to work?

If you continue to get additional outside scholarhips will your school allow you to use the additional money to purchase books or a computer?

Eligibility: Students are eligible to be considered for a GMS scholarship if they:

* Are African American, American Indian/Alaska Native, Asian Pacific Islander American or Hispanic American,

So Korean, Chinese, and Japanese are not eligible right?

I thought you had to make like under 40K

yes they r eligible. can i see ur stats for those accepted because most went to not really competitive schools so i'm wondering about their stats.

don't stop looking for scholaships

Gates only covers self help

You will need other funds to pay for other expenses so apply for as many scholarships as possible

By the way I am a Gates Millenium scholar

Do you have GMSP login site address? I lost it.

"most went to not really competitive schools "
Im GMS at Stanford. FYI, many Gates scholars go to competive schools.

i don't reallly know this well but http://www.gmsp.org/(qbb1cl55eefiuh45elgr52ne)/profile.aspx
according to this not many went to competitive schools. If i am wrong (probably) can u explain to me where i can find the list of those who go to competitive schools?

people have different definitions of a "competitive" school, so i doubt you will find such a list. All I know is that there are scholars at my school, harvard, pton, etc. Perhaps the reason some scholars go to state schools is because money is a big issue and one doesn't find out if they are a GMS until late in the school year, AFTER the college application process. And of course the majority of the student population at "competitive schools" probably wouldn't qualify for Gates, to put it plainly.

but i wonder why people from like CA didn't all go to UCB or UCLA then. MOst rather went to some other schools.
