borkborkbork: Thats a monster essay :o

which one was it?

Loco, thanks. That essay topic is actually really unique/humanitarian.

I just need to look for stuff that has happened throughout my high school years, I just want the best possible topic that I can find.

& thank you for the advice :)

My essay on a non-educational pursuit was 7,764 chars.
My essay on a subject I struggled with was 7,702 chars.
My essay about a time I was treated unfairly was 5,947 chars.*
My last essay was 6,080 chars.

*I really had no idea what to write about.

4 more essays to go. and three of the ones I did need to be edited real bad.

for one of the two questions that ask about contributions to your community or family, should I talk about how I helped my disabled mother?

LocoArts:
r u applying this yr too or r u a past gates scholar…u seem to know quite a bit about this :)

Hi is there a gates scholar who can help me edit my honors/awards, and unpaid community service? Also, I dont understand Leadership Roles. Like If I was vice president of something…etc what about me a participant?. Thank you :D

borkborkbork: You can send me a copy of your essay at my extra e-mail: kareemthegreat_7@hotmail.com and I will reply with a fully edited/corrected essay through my personal legit e-mail(this way none of us is at risk for recieving spam mail…except for my extra e-mail)

aziangirl: I am a first-time GMS applicant but I have read every forum since 2005 completely and have applied to over 40 scholarships this year…lol…Im just trying to help with what I know…

borkborkbork: Thats a really good topic.

I see a lot of people on here who have like 200 hours of community service. I hope you can tell us how many hours you had and if you think that was a big reason why you got it, aside from your other accomplishments and essays?

borkborkbork: Also, If you choose to have me peer-edit your essays, please notify me in this forum so that I may know when to check my e-mail.

gaarachick: Judging is based on a balancing scale between your accomplishments and your essays. You may have 200 hours of community service, but they will not fund you if you spent those hourss doing nothing…this is where the essays come in. The essays explain where, how, why and when you spent those 200 hours. They evaluate your persona on leadership and commitment. Yor accomplishments serve the purpose of describing you as a student( If you spent 1000 hours doing service and maintained fairly high GPA’s, you are perfect: You spent time helping your community and still proggressed through your academics)

Roseandraindrops:I dont fully understand your question, but I may be able to help…If you could specify which section is troubling you…

. LocoArts has just joined cc within the last 2 days. PLEASE do not send essay’s or any other information to such a new poster or any new poster, [not just loco] claiming to help you. There are a couple of past Gates scholars that have “time” on CC available on this thread, please refer to them for information.

I’m sorry for offending LocoArts, but to join and ask people to send essays for peer review within a 2 day period raises red flags.

GA2012MOM is correct, I have joined CC recently… It seems like an interesting community;however, to derride my moral standard based on my membership to this website… I do not know about that one. She is right, I am not a Gates Scholar and you will probably have better results contacting a past GMS, but I am solely here for the purpose of helping. I have already submitted my application so I can help with the process. As far as peer-deiting essays go, It is ultimately the choice of the student. I see no harm in it(as I have already relinquished my rights to edit my own application) and peer-editing has proved a valuable form of improving writing skills. I am an AP student; I have scored a perfect Score on every essay I have written for my class and last year’s AP Exam. Also, My essays allowed me to be picked from 30,000 applicants into the prestigeous NYU Poly(only 100 of the applicants were chosen for general admissions this year). After all, If you do not agree with my advice or correction, just simply do not follow it. I will not convince or force you to allow me to check your essays, I balance 2 internships, 8 AP classes and 2 additional college classes… and my friends’ College applications. As you can see my plate is full(I have no time to mess up any students). Despite this, I am willing to help the youth advance to college. This scholarship is HUGE! It is the Mother of all general financial aid. If I do not get it, I want one of you to get it. The world needs us young people…this scholarship is the commence of our greatness. We need to keep our Cores(Sciences,MAth,English ) alive and as long as I have the ability to help you advance, I will help you advance. In the end, 1000 of us will be able to hold the title of GMS… Who would it be? I do not know…But I’m sure each of us in this forum have the potential and ability to win it. Why should we involve ourselves in bitter competition? Clearly, it would benefit us all if we were to help each other achieve this goal. By improving upon ourselves through this forum, we can all be included in that 1000. I am merely sparking a fire, I may have been the first to offer my help but I surely won’t be the last.

I have a question about this. Do they ever end up verifying the community service hours? I know you send in the SAR and transcript (which has the hours) but does the # have to match with what you write? I do my hours but I just dont get them signed. Hypothetically if I get chosen as a finalist and they somehow notice the difference in #s, eh will this be all bad?

Just a question, how many of you all in this thread are Hispanic applicants? Peruvian applicant right here ^.^

LilBabySeaOtter:I am hispanic… I’m Puerto Rican

ZhengMaster:I dont know about this scholarship verifying hours( I wouldn’t doubt it though). Most scholarships do match hours but they do not mind a slight difference in hours as long as they are not from an official volunteer center. If you were a volunteer firefighter, your hours should be exact(since you have to work by hours); however if your service is something like helping at the soup kitchen or neighborhood gardening, a difference in hours doesn’t matter. Neither my SAR or Transcript contain the amount of hours I give to any of my activities; I chose one of my activity coordinators as my recommender for this reason. All in all, You should be ok. Dont worry too much about it. Good Luck!!

Hi, is there a gates scholar who can edit my Honors and Awards/Unpaid Volunteer Work And Community Service? Thank you :D
