Gates Millenium Scholarship 2012-2013

What are my chances of receiving the Gates Millennium Scholarship if:

My EFC: 0.00000

I am eligible for the full amount of the Federal Pell Grant.

I have 3.3 unweighted G.P.A on a 4.0 scale.

I have over 1000 hours of community service

I won one national award on community Service, one national honor on community service, and an award on community service given from the county I reside in.

I have great Leadership Potential.

I am the Communications Chairperson of the Dolton Youth Commission, and the Dolton Chapter S.A.V.E (Students Against Violence Everywhere), I am the Recorder of my school’s National Honor Society, Student Representative at Large for my school’s Student Board of Education, and the jury foreman of the youth court.

I have four academic awards and they are:

Counselor’s Award:

French Honors Award:

Outstanding Senior Project Presentation:

Student of the Month:

Now my Question is what are my chances of earning the Gates Millennium Scholarship if I only have a 3.3 unweighted GPA. Which is what they require?

You are probably very qualified so just dont worry about as much because we still have a bit of a ways to go before winners are anounced. What I also want to point out is that even though you have all those merits, I hope you found a way to express it effectively through your essays. How strong of a personality or character do you think your essays built for you…

I agree. I read somewhere that essays were the most important part & your leadership.

I did and I also talked about the obstacles I went through and how it relates to my success in school and the community.

are you guys mailing or faxing?

I’m mailing tomorrow

I mailed mine Friday. So the documents should be at GMS Office no later than Wednesday.

Well, I just got my rejection letter yesterday. I’m kinda glad I finally got some closure. For all the non-finalists, keep yours heads up. There is still hope.
<congrats to="" all="" the="" finalists=""></congrats>

I faxed on Friday. I figured it as faster and am hoping I was one of the first to send things in :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye: haha

so are the scholars chosen divided amongst each ethnicity equally? i remember reading somewhere that said
African American: 350
Hispanic: 350
Asian: 150
Native America: 150

so is it the above, or 250 for each group?

Mailing and faxing Monday

I must admit that my main objective in writing my essays was to be as concise and poignant/potent as possible. I limited each essay to 500 words (1&1/2-2 pages) and I started out with a powerful anecdotal opening relating to the subject then I told the story ending with the significance the subject/obstacle had on my life and made me stronger. So if anything, I think my essays are the strongest part of my app right now…

yeah same here tmgreene, except that I had some that were 800 words or so. But that’s great that they’re the strongest, since they’re basically the most important part!

And I don’t think they choose by race honestly, that’s not fair at all. I think they choose by whoever deserves it most, and those that are above par with everything, and have potential to be a leader.

Anyone want to write about how they first found out and what their reaction was…

Mine was: I was walking to the place I go to during lunch time and all of a sudden when I walked in my councelor and mentor and everyone else started clapping and saying congrats but i had completely forgot about the whole scholarship lol!

haha that’s awesome!

I was expecting some sort of news within those couple of days, so I was checking my email a lot although I wasn’t “excited”. I was in AP lit, and I was on my phone, and checked my email. I saw the subject was “Gates Millennium Finalist” and my heart started beating really fast. Then the teacher was telling everyone to listen up so I had to put my phone away real quickly, but as soon as she stopped talking, I checked, and it was like “you were selected” yadada. And I told my best friend who was sitting next to me, but that was it. I didn’t want to brag to anyone, so I just celebrated in my head. haha

I was in acadec practice and we were testing our log ins for the essay competition. I had logged in so i was just on my iphone and i was sort of unconsciously going through my email and i saw an email that said Gates Millinneum and i opened it and read it and i screamed OMG and everybody jumped and my coach was like WHAT IN THE WORLD HAPPENED. And i just gave her the phone to read it because i was too excited. I told her to call my counselor off of my phone and my mom too lol. I guess i was just so shocked because it was so unexpected. I couldnt even focus on practice anymore and i ran down stairs and my counselor gave me like 6 hugs lol

My branch is UNCF and I’m from Texas.

Still have not received any letter or email? Should I call or is it wise to just accept that I may not be a finalist?

I ended up calling… They said that not all letters and emails have been sent and that they were doing the letters by LAST NAME… so don’t loose hope… I know I’m not.

what if you still have not heard anything at all ? Should I be worried?
