I do not believe you can do that. They will send the Recipients a GMS ID

It is operated fully automatically, there is no communication with an official

This is from the Facebook group:

"The news has become public, so I’m sharing it here so there aren’t rumors…

The selection process is just complete for the 2012 class of Gates Millennium Scholars. All finalists will hear from GMS in the coming week.

Please DO NOT contact the GMS offices for a status update. Information will NOT be provided.

Mr. G"

Who honestly wished they had asked for SAT scores? Personally I believe those type of tests are not fair for minorities. I know a couple of friends (very rich) who were lucky enough to have their parents pay $2,000-$4,000 so they could take prep courses. I do well in school but not on the SAT for several factors. One being english is not my first or second language but a third!

When you wish for things like that, think again. It’s not fair to include SAT scores when people like me did not have an equal opportunity to prepare for them.

I had no classes and got a 2230. Prep is for suckers. I’m a poor minority too, but blaming low scores on not having funds is just redirecting your problems.

That is where you are being bias. The purpose of the Gates Millennium Scholarship is to award minorities a full ride to any institution they like to attend. The grade based off of community service, leadership potential, and academic achievement.

Your Academic Acheivement is the high scores but everyone else may achieve differently in Academics.

They are still including academic success. They should at least ask for the sat or act, which is a more standardized way to compare academic success between finalists. Sure, the focus is on community service, but if academic achievement IS in fact an area of competition, it should at least be asked for.

lol Toasty,
You have a point but the test in general is not made for the majority. SAT is almost known internationally as most people seek admission into colleges in the U.S and they need to take it(which is fine) UNTIL you get to the english part which not only requires knowledge and use of the english language but also a background of the United States History and a good knowledge of our society and culture. Now, tell me the SAT is still fair for everybody…

I have a 3.6 unweighted GPA but my SAT was about 1700. I also took several AP classes and did well so…

Um, I don’t know what test you’re taking but there is no need for a knowledge of us history or culture. For English, sure, you need to know the language well, but that isn’t a valid excuse as you’re going to an institution in the United states. You should have a mastery of the English language. So yeah, the sat is fair if you’re going to try to study here. Your arguments are flawed.

Similarly, your Unweighted GPA means nothing. My school is easy, where the val has a 4.0 and a 1500. I do as well, but with a 2230. School ease and the variations of this difficulty make it hard to determine the academic achievement of applicants. As a result, the sat should be used. It’s the only standardized thing they can use to at least somewhat accurately compare finalists, even if academic achievement isn’t a big part of this scholarship.

SAT 1 English is only vocab/prompt reading based. And what’s the excuse for a 510 on the math? Math isn’t the same in language X and Y?

And if I remember correctly, they only meet up to need, not full-rides. It may be in your case at UMBC, but not for many. Not everyone is “fortunate enough” (or unfortunate) to have an EFC of zero.

In my opinion, GMS is overrated for those kids attending upper-tiered schools that meets need, especially professional school hopefuls.

Who cares if those other kids paid for SAT prep? Life ain’t fair, that’s why you applied to this. Get over it.

Has anyone been notified yet?

lolToasty: “My school is easy, where the val has a 4.0 and a 1500. I do as well, but with a 2230. School ease and the variations of this difficulty make it hard to determine the academic achievement of applicants.”

Well, that’s why we have School Profiles.

All in all, you guys have good arguments. I’m glad GMS didn’t ask for them!

I’m surprised for even making it to the finalist round. Good luck to all of us again.

Lakeawead : I have no excuse. I just don’t like the SAT.

lakeawead, can’t you show some support and not be so pessimistic?

Everyone else, are you excited? We’re going to be notified within the week!

Sometime this week, I told my brother that I’d be so sad if I receive a thin envelope from GMS. So last night, he came into my room at midnight while I was just falling asleep and threw a small envelope on my bed and went like “Hey, … This is from Gates”. I almost passed out 'cause I know what the small envelopes mean. Then I slowly got up and flipped it to to see the address, it was from my HS. It has prom/graduation information.

Ahhhhhhhh Tensions tensions tensions.

The school profile said nothing about this. The secondary school report has the information regarding numbers and stuff. School profile was just a one sheet paper that bragged about where kids got in.

Ok. My school profile had all our AP courses and how many students are enrolled in those classesetc…
If you are enrolled in an AP class where not many sign up for it, it shows that you challenge yourself and that you are motivated. In addition to that, if you do good the class, that is also a plus.

It also has the rigorous programs at my school.
I personally think this is just as valuable as SAT scores.
I won’t talk about this again. There is no point. We all have different opinions and I definitely respect that.

So… Should we start hearing tomorrow?

hopefully!
I’m so excited and nervous and scared! =)

Yeah me too, it’s torture
