I got my packet today!!! Native American from Michigan

Asian scholar from Oklahoma!

Congratulations to the new 2012 GM Scholars! My daughter was awarded this scholarship last year and I can’t tell you how it has helped us SOOOO much. It has taken an enormous amount of stress off of me and my daughter. We are so thankful for Bill and Melinda Gates’ kindness and passion to help those in need.

EmoryGuy how are you? I was on CC with you last year. Have you heard from GMS yet? I was really hoping you were/are one of the lucky ones!

APIASF GMS scholar from South Jersey!

I was declined. Congrads to all 2012 GM Scholars!!!

Hispanic GMS scholar from North Carolina!

And surmised in one piece of paper was my rejection letter, well there goes my hopes of attending college. What use is getting into good schools if one can’t pay for it?

Congrats to all of you who got it.

I took a nap and had my third Gates acceptance dream. Woke up to a package! So excited! Congratulations to all my finalists and scholars!!

Don’t feel discouraged, everything happens for a reason. If we’re good enough to be finalists then there’s something amazing waiting along the way for those who didn’t get gates.

Hispanic from Boston, Ma

American University Class of 2016!

It’s been real high school. See you later. Haha

Good schools? The good schools meet full need, which most people who applied for GMS did not get into.

I wonder what you think of top 25 schools, are they a fantasy of yours and can only envision the rich attending? Again with the lower class’s “poor me” attitude. You didn’t work hard enough, live with it and move on.

Jeffth for your information I recieved a total amount of scholarship of 60% (without counting loans) it’s not my fault I can’t pay for school. I’m not weeping because I didn’t get it, getting the GMS would have given stability to my family by providing the last amount of money I needed.

Officially part of the GMS family! This is amazing beyond words!

African-American, New York City.

@ Jeffth,

I believe you are being incredibly insensitive towards others feelings during a bitter-sweet moment like this. And what’s up with the “lower class’s” “poor me” attitude? Some of today’s wealthiest individuals came from poor backgrounds! They were perseverent and worked for their hard earnings. Also, why are you subjecting the lower class to this statement? There are many rich and middle-class people who always want pity. In fact, in my school the poor people worked their tails off while those whom you may consider above us were nagging about very simple things. Lastly, I saw a comment you made earlier regarding a person who got the Gates and will go to UCI in comparison to another who was rejected and was admitted to UCLA. It is NOT your place at all to discredit anyone’s award solely because of the school they will attend. You do not have to go to a popular school to prove you have done something productive over the course of your high school career. And yet again some of the worlds most influential people did not attend big name schools (and some never graduated high scho). It is really incredible how people get the nerve to say things over the internet.

@Coppell94,
Be proud of what you’ve achieved by making it to the finalist round! You must be one great person! The end justifies the means–do what you have to do to attain your dreams and aspirations! Use this to fuel yourself to achieve even greater things! You will achieve! My recommendation for the future is that you don’t put everything into one basket. Spread your options out because nothing is guaranteed. But other than that, I don’t know your but I’m proud of you and you do not have to explain yourself nor circumstance to anyone :D

I am a Gates Millennium Scholar…SO HAPPY!!! From Georgia,I am so thankful right now…God is amazing !

My point being is to continue with life; if you cant afford the “good school”, start at a CC and transfer. If you hadn’t noticed, many “middle class” families cannot pay for college either, and they are not fortunate enough to be able to apply for GMS.

Was I classifying the entire lower class as having the “poor me” attitude? Hell no, I started out lower class and we can only deal with it and move on. There are 62 schools that meet full need; attending one of these is the ticket out of poverty. Gates is very generous to help the second-tier kids that are not on-level with these schools attend B-level schools.

Update: UCLA > UCI, any argument to this? You get to CHOOSE which school to go to, no financial bearing, I wouldn’t CHOOSE I over LA. Did (s)he deserve the award? Yes.

Hi, im new to this I am also a Gates finalist anxiously waiting to hear back from them! anybody in Nor Cal hear today?

Got my package in the mail today! So honored, Hispanic from south Texas!

Gates scholar from north Texas!

@jeffth please stay away from this page. For one, you have no idea what your talking about and two, your being extremely disrespectful to students who have put in such a huge amount of time in order to get this scholarship but were ,unfortunately, just off. Have some respect for people who are facing extremely harsh life circumstances by keeping your dumb opinions to yourself. Oh and let me educate you about something, NOT ALL THE TOP SCHOOLS FULLY COVER NEED. UC Berkeley and UCLA are only two of the many top schools in the nation that do not meet full need even if your EFC is 000.

Is there a reason that UCB and LA don’t meet need? Maybe it’s because they are PUBLIC SCHOOLS that are funded by the GOVERNMENT? Only two public’s meet need, UNC and UVA. Whilst applying to “top schools”, I’d hope those with low EFC’s consider which are financially feasible and which are not.

If you can get into those two, you can get into at least half of the 62 that does meet need.

My sibling was a Gates scholar a few years ago but was responsible enough to apply to meets-need schools.

The mentality “I can only go to college if Gates pays for it” is wrong in so many ways. There are plenty of options for high achieving low EFC kids to go to college.
