Thx for heads up on professional schools. And yes we were already aware, but not deterred. A Phd in Biomed Eng & completed residency in Orthopedic Surgery is a strong combination to heal many.

Yay, I am an Asian male Gates scholar from the Bay Area!

GMS puts a lot of weight on volunteering, extracurricular activities, and academic achievement. Colleges you got into, SATs, and GPAs are not determinants.

@jeffth,

I am VERY aware that people of all socio-economic backgrounds are suffering from a slowly recovering economy. And the audacity to even say" Gates is very generous to help the second-tier kids attend B-level schools." This is not an act if generosity, this is simply rewarding those whom have worked their behinds off! Reality check, 24,000 people applied to this scholarship! I’m sure that sure many in that bunch were accepted into Ivy League schools! Correction, there WERE! I myself am a Posse Scholar (one of 900 to be accepted out of 14,000) selected to attend a top-tier school, Discus Awards recipient, 3rd place in the country in the U.S National Business Plan Competition, featured in the Daily News for my work, worked with Michelle Obama and Madison Avenue advertising firms for her “Let’s Go!” initiative while grabbing Beyonce for a video, and that is just a nutshell. I did all of this and much more while maintaining a 3.8 GPA. So you can honestly take that statement and shove it down your throat. If this program were looking for 4.0 GPA/2400 SAT holders then they would have done that. HOWEVER, there is much more than just the surface FYI! The people selected for this are America’s Future Leaders. Whether you like that or not is your problem. Perhaps if you were a leader or “worked harder” (and hitting point, many are extremely qualified and may have been rejected not because they did not work hard enough, but perhaps they were not the type of people the Gates was looking for) you may have gotten been honored this as well. Yet all you can do is try to find flaw within the program and scholars. Perhaps that is why your sibling, friend or whoever got this award and not you. People can smell someone like you a mile away.

I’m all for freedom of speech and engaging in others perspectives, but you can take your malice elsewhere because it is NOT needed in the midst of celebration.

And since it is clear you are at least partially blind, you need to take another look at the scholar profiles on the GMS website. Obliviously, most if not all go to tier-1 schools. You really go through a lot to make yourself feel better than what you are SMH.

Would you consider UCI a top tier school? Another person with a <1600 SAT was a finalist that was going to attend UMBC using GMS, but is infected with the, once again, “poor me” attitude and is not going to college at all.

I have never applied for GMS. Those that are scholars did deserve it; finalists come up empty handed.

Has anyone received an email from Gates today?

UCI is a very good school that is becoming better and better at a very fast rate. Prestige doesn’t matter as much as you think in undergrad. Rankings don’t always properly reflect the great aspects of certain schools.

@SaraSpartan2012 Nopee. They said they would send us emails today on the gates scholar package but they still haven’t.

Hey Sameer, by chance did you go Porter Magnet?

Nopeee. I just checked my junk folder in my email and found a gates email sent to me about 1 hour ago. It basically just asked me if I have received my Gates Scholar packet in the mail

SO, me and my brother both just received our packets in the mail…WE ARE OFFICIALLY GATES MILLENNIUM SCHOLARS CLASS OF 2012!! Native Americans from OREGON! HECK YA! It is crazy that we both got it, but oh god, oh so happy!

I received the gates yesterday. Hsf. I was pretty happy, especially since it was based on real stuff and not academics as much (so much for wanting sat scores lol)

Sent from my SPH-D710 using CC

Asian (Pakistani) Gates Scholar from Sacramento, California! I got the e-mail yesterday, but have not received the packet yet. Congratulations to everybody, and for those who didn’t make it, you’re still the best of the best!

Hi. I got the GMS email yesterday saying I was chosen. I really didn’t know much about the scholarship and I actually put it together at the last minute. I haven’t researched it yet. Can anybody explain to me how big of a deal it is? Sorry if I seem naive I just applied and never would have guessed I would be chosen. Also I though my really short responses to the questions would hurt my changes. But it must have been a plus, once that you consider that they were about a paragraph

yayyyyy ASIAN SCHOLAR from Downtown Los Angeles ~ heading to BERKELEY woohoo ~

Congratulations to all the scholars selected! I am officially a scholar as well!

@Mich0824 I feel the same way!

I haven’t been active, but I am a Gates Scholar ! From S. California ! :D

did everyone get a request through email to fill out a profile?
