Gates Millennium Scholarship 2013-2014

Your nominator/recommender have to make their own account first. Once they do that, they log in and they will be able to search for you using the id number you are given. Then they confirm that you are the student they are writing a reference for, and once that happens, they take it from there. I the student id number is a 9 digit number. The first 5 digits are your zip code, and the last 4 digits are the last 4 numbers of the phone number you list as primary on your gates account. Taken from the GMS website: “For example, if the student’s five-digit zip code is 99999 and preferred phone number is 703-555-1234, then the registration identification number would be 99999-1234.”

Would tutoring be considered a leadership experience?

Just a little more detail ^^^
It’s for question 5. I really can’t think of any other “leadership” roles that I’ve had. I’ve never had any of those “big titled” role of a club or organization or anything. My school seriously does not take clubs seriously. The clubs we do have are terribly inactive. As for jobs, never really had a “real” job. Any helpers?

You do not need to write about a “big” leadership role for essay five. You don’t need to be the president of clubs or have 500 service hours or anything like that to get the scholarship-- it all depends on who you are overall. I was never the president of a club or any sorts, so I wrote about how I was a huge help to the newspaper staff. You can use tutoring as a leadership experience-- as long as it answers the prompt and shows that you have shown leadership in that area. As for a job, you do not need to have a “real” job experience to apply of any sorts.

Hello everyone!

I am a senior from Texas, and I am planning on spplying to GMS. I have six and a half essays completed. I was wondering if there’s any past scholars on the thread that will,be of some help? I am having trouble in figuring out how to approach the last essay: “Is there anything else you would like to tell…” Anyone know what type of an answer they are expecting?

I am a scholar from last year. I will stick around this forum to answer any questions.

@Miggygarza96: The last essay is all up to you. It can be a personal statement, a thank you, etcetera. I wrapped everything up in the last essay and talked more about where I come from. It is also nice to add a thank you at the end.

Thank God for you! Question, do you think not having any real awards/honors will affect me as an applicant? I never knew that other schools have things such as “Principle’s List” or “Most Outstanding Students” or anything like that. My school never gave out awards. My area is pretty isolated so it is hard to get any award from the community for community service or something.

The awards you list show your character… (what you are good at, what good you did, etc.) It should not affect your chances of getting the scholarship, and having no or little awards listed does not mean you are less. I remember when I applied, other than academic things, (honor roll and such…) I didn’t have too many to list because my school didn’t do a lot of that either. Don’t worry about it too much because the readers will have the chance to learn more about your character from your essays and other parts of your application.

I’m pretty much done with mine but for the authorization it has two questions.

Opt out of having your scholarship information shared with UNCF personnel for contact purposes?

Allow elements of your profile to be updated from the submitted application?

These are yes or no answers, but I don’t know what the correct response would be.

I put no for 1. and yes for 2.

@diffuse, all my essays are close to the word limit of 1000. I tried to just respond to the prompts but it ended up being close to 1000 words. I have finished all of my essays. Do you think I should try to shorten it up a little bit? I am afraid the GMS readers would count off or something.

If you think some parts are unnecessary, then cut them out. They will NOT count off points for having too long or too short essays. Do remember to be fairly concise and do not fluff things up, becoming wordy.
As long as your essay addresses the prompt, your word count is fine.

Deadline is coming soon. Sooo nervous! It would be a dream come true if I became a finalist.

Lol, I have been gone for a while. @juliaax5 I agree with you. I am so nervous.

Just submitted mine! Good luck everyone :)

What if I had asked a teacher to be my nominator and we both signed up an account for her and just took a look at the nominator form. But when I get to my student landing page, she’s under “recommender form”. Did she do something wrong?

She may have accidentally done the recommender form… Talk to her again and see if she actually did. I had a teacher who accidentally did the same thing and I just asked her to do the other one.

By the way, GOOD LUCK to everyone who has/will submit their application! :)

I’ve just submitted my application. Now the waiting game begins…

Btw, I’m feeling really nervous about my essays. Lol.

@juliaax5 I feel really nervous about my essays too! How much did you write for each??

Half are like 500-600 and the other half are 800-1000. Lol. Yours? I feel I wrote too much… It’s hard to tell if I’m being wordy since I’m kind of the one that wrote it if that makes sense… I got my english teacher to proofread all of the essays and he didn’t mention it. But I still don’t feel confident about it. Haha…

Mine are about the same length as your essays. At first all but one of my essays were 900 plus, but I condensed some of them because of fluffy wording. And yes I understand what you’re saying, and I think you’ll be fine. I took unnecessary working out like, “I learned this,” or “This taught me this.” It’s better to just state what I learned, rather than actually saying it.
