Gates Millennium Scholarship 2013-2014

I read through all of last years forum for than once. I can’t wait til more people start discussing on here!!!

Do you think that prestige of the schools we have been admitted will affect our decisions if we are chosen as Finalists?

It only makes sense to believe that the student who was admitted to Stanford stands a far better chance than the student who was admitted to a large public institution.

@Carotid I don’t think so because at my school, 2 years a go, there was a Scholar who went to UGA. Last year there was also a scholar who went to the University of Miami. It all depends on the essays and the documents they ask for after you are selected as finialsit.

@ Carotid
No, I don’t think that the school matters. I have had five students win the gates, and four of them went to state universities. I think that Krazed 2014 is right- it probably depends on whatever score you were given (essays + application + recs) and then your documents.

If you haven’t joined the facebook page for applicants, I recommend it! The guy who moderates it is a former recipient and I believe also an ambassador for the GMSP program (could be wrong- I’m not a student so I am not a member of that group).

@ Carotid, the prestige of the school doesn’t matter; however, choosing a state school will ensure that all your expenses will be covered. My son chose a private school and there is still an out of pocket expense for us.

I am SO NERVOUS for the email that says if were a semi-finalist or not bows down and prays

anybody get an email yet?

@HSsenior2014

We don’t get the email till march

Last year, they received a letter during the first week of March.

Correct me if I’m wrong but the finalists get notified first, right? And if you didn’t hear anything for a couple of weeks after everyone else got their finalist notification, you didn’t get it?

Btw, I’m so nervous that it makes me sick.

Guys dont worry too much. At the end, everything will be OK.

@juliaax5

From previous year’s forums it just seemed like people found out when they found out. Because some finalists posted that they found out after some posted about not getting it. I guess it’s just random.

And If you don’t get it your supposed to receive a notification about that so if you don’t get anything you should call and inquire about your status.

One more week. I try not to think about it because it makes me even more nervous, but how can you not when the days are creeping up. I wish us all good luck and hopefully we all have some good news in a few days.

SO NERVOUS.

me too! I praying to God that I will have the opportunity to win this wonderful scholarship! Fingers crossed!

I’ve been praying for this scholarship as well. My 18th birthday is on the 3rd so hopefully this will be the best birthday present I’ve ever received

I need to know :c

I feel like my stats aren’t good enough to get this awesome scholarship. It’s so terrifying! I understand it’s all in the essays but I guess I won’t know until next week or so.

Has anybody received an e-mail yet?

Just joining the threads of postings. Also, just finished reading last year’s GMS thread. Interesting stories… and as with this year’s / season’s application period, not only can I feel the emotion, but can relate to it as well. My wife and I are legal guardians to a high school senior who’s a GMS applicant. He didn’t come into our home until he was 14 y/o (freshman in hs), so needless to say, not much time for us to save for his college education, but I won’t kid myself, even if we had the full 18 years, he’d still be applying for the scholarship :slight_smile: . Regardless, everybody here has their story as well. And the best part, it feels like such a supportive community. Which is so refreshing when coming from the competitive atmosphere we all can tend to find ourselves in every now and again. I’ve gotten a chance to read pretty much all of the postings, and I genuinely wish the folks on this board the best of luck. And just like a lot of the folks on this board… we’re almost to the point of biting nails.
