Gay Community at Wes?

I was hoping someone could guesstimate the gay community at Wesleyan-20%, 30%, higher? When S and I visited the campus, all student admissions personnel we encountered except one were gay. We assumed that was an anomaly, but was it?

calgal: that was most definitly an anomoly. The queer community is certainly large/vocal, and Wes is the kind of place where a lot of people (though by no means all!) experiment/question their orinatation, at least a little bit, because it is a very open enviroment. However, there is by no means a majority of students who identify as "gay." I'm terrible with guestimation, so I can't give an actual guess at a percentage, but I can't imagine much more than 30% of the student body (if that) identify as queer or gay.

Do you think Wesleyan has more gays than Oberlin? I've heard Oberlin has the most gays out of the academically top LACs, but I've just heard that from some friends who know people that go there.

i heard that wesleyan is mostly a gay community, which is making me consider not going there anymore

aBeautifulMind: I'd imagine we're about at the level of Oberlin, but I have no idea about actual numbers.

rappasani: Not true. At all. In fact, if there is any worry about the queer community at Wes, it would be that they self-segragate too much, and therefore their presence isn't felt ENOUGH in most people's everyday life. But yeah, bascially, Wes is the kind of place that will be very open if you are gay/queer, and will frown on people who are not accepting of the queer community, but, unless you purposfully immerse yourself in the queer community, it will NOT dominate your life in any way.

No worries rappasani. This thread is a bit misleading. Wes has a very large percentage of smart, well-rounded mainstream kids who are not gay - about the same as you'd find at any liberal arts college, and some smart well rounded kids who are gay - but it is a much smaller percentage than people think. Visit the campus and see for yourself. Sure there is a healthy tolerance for all lifestyles - which is a real positive. Wes is a school for people who are intelligent and creative- really, really creative. Take a look at Wes Alums - amazingly successful!

my guess is also that we're quite similar to Oberlin.

There's certainly an active queer community here - and if you come to Wesleyan, you're going to be exposed to political and social issues involving sexual and gender identity. If you're not open-minded and comfortable with that, then maybe Wes isn't the school for you; Wesleyan is all about challenging perceptions and opening you up to new ideas about the world. That said, it's certainly NOT true that Wesleyan is mostly a gay community. The majority of my friends are still straight, and I think that's still true in most social circles.

i have nothing against it..ppl should always have the freedom to do what they want..i was jus worried that i wouldnt fit in if the majority was gay

^That's precisely why I feel bad for the people, because they're the true minority, and thus they probably always worry about fitting in.

Does anyone else think its really funny that the advertisement that comes up on this thread is for some "Real Jock Gay Fitness Community" site? LOL

Anyway, my best friend's older brother went to Wesleyan and he said there are a lot of gay men and women there. I'm sure it will be a blast for you.

visit wes. I have manyf riends at wes now and it's a top choice for me - there is a small vocal gay community like at most colleges today but the majority of the kids are straight and very mainstream like you would find at any campus - the difference is at wes the kids are more accepting of different lifestyles.

Are there a fair amount of straight, athletic, preppy type of people?

Of course. (though i would not say the majority)
