As a gay student looking at schools, I always wonder how, of course, the gay community is accepted at my prospective schools. Wes is probably my top choice, but I'm worried--how is the gay scene at Wes?

No reason to be worried at all. Wes is incredibly gay-friendly. One aspect of this which often gets overlooked is that you can choose to live with someone of any gender. Many other schools require you to room with someone of the same biological sex, which is incredibly heteronormative and discriminatory.

I wouldn't worry; Wesleyan is known for its liberal approach to difference. I have reason to believe that your sexuality will pose you no problems at Wes.

It's important to remember, though, that at Wes, being gay isn't exactly a "difference". It's really common, and not a relevant factor when forming friendships, which is really cool.

I find the gay community to be far too small here.

Oh, please. Brand_182, if there aren't enough queers for you at Wesleyan, there aren't enough in the whole WORLD.

Do you really think there's another really good school with a substantially larger proportion of queer students?

I'm sure it wouldn't be too difficult to find, especially since Wes is an LAC. ;)

you're both right. if you're looking for critical mass, Wes can't be beat. If you're looking for sheer numbers, you probably need to look at a bigger university.

So how gay is Wes, percentage-wise?

well, there are at least three on this board, that I know of.

Would you say that the gay community is an omnipresence at Wes. (no, no, I'm not homophobic, just curious)?

Well yes, 3 here, and all the Wes grads i know are queer. But i thought that was just by chance.

very gay-friendly! altho i have no one at Wes, when we toured it years ago, there was a very obvious gay presence. there were flyers and art work all over the windows of the community center windows. i think a rally or something was going on...right there in the midst of tours!

Gay groups are present at Wes, as are jocks, preps, hipsters, musicians, kayakers, young Democrats and plenty of others. I don't see any one group as having an outsized influence or presence. Feels like most other elite Northeastern campuses.

I would also note that gay groups aren't mutually exclusive from jocks, preps, hipsters, kayakers, democrats, etc. (though I'm sure that's not what prefrosh meant). There are plenty of queer resources on campus and a significant community - but most gay students, I would say, identify as gay but don't make it their defining characteristic and only hang out with other gay people (though there is a "core" kind of community).

Also, for those of you who are straight or mostly straight, there is still a significant portion of straight people and you won't have any problems meeting someone :P

Re: the omnipresence of queer students at Wes--

You WILL know (and most likely be friends with) people who are something other than straight. It's just bound to happen, given the high proportion of us here.

hehehe. I'm just kinda tired coming from a high school where I'm like one of five (at most...at least, out people) where there are no options whatsoever

EricD, I have a different problem-- all the other out people at my school are guys!

hehehe, work it out jojo. i'll find you a cutie

some girl I know is doing her freshman year at Wes right now. over break she came home, and she had cut off all her hair and had a revelation that she was bisexual. she's a terrible person though, you wouldn't actually want to meet her. :/
