Gay Life @ UNC?

Having come out during my time here at UNC, I could not have asked for a more open, accepting group of friends than the ones I have at Carolina. Dating is certainly common, even though you will be forced upon occasion to decide if the hookup scene is something you are comfortable with or something you would rather avoid. I choose to avoid it as often as I can, and I am having no trouble meeting great new guys. Good luck you any of you planning on telling your parents soon; I know how hard that can be. But always remember: if you think it is going to be impossibly difficult to be honest with your family and friends about the way you were born, I can promise you that it was no more difficult than spending the first 20 years of my life hiding who I really was. I wish you all luck, and maybe I’ll even get to meet some of you next year. :)

Just wanted to give an update on this thread and just say that finding other gay incoming freshmen isn’t so hard. I found some really nice gays/lesbians who are going through similar situations through this facebook group for accepted UNC C/O 2016 students. If you haven’t joined the facebook group for the C/O of 2016, you should definitely join to meet new people!

Awesome, UNC2016, what group? There are several but I can’t find the one with any LGBT-talk.

partyhat: I believe it is the official UNC class of 2016 facebook group. Type in UNC Class of 2016 and I believe you should see the group. Right now it has around 479 members and the group isn’t focused on LGBT-talk, but just incoming freshmen who have any questions or just want to meet new people. I just started randomly talking to some members and found out I wasn’t the only gay guy in the group.lol. But if you’re already not in the group you can message me your email address, so I can add you as a friend on fb and invite you to the group if you’d like. But yeah, someone should definitely add a UNC facebook group on LGBT-talk!

Does anyone know what I can expect from the LGBT group? What kind of activities/events are commonly practiced? How often does the group meet?

Thanks dude, I found the group!! I have no idea what the LGBTQSA is like… but I guess I’ll see you there! It’s supposed to be great.

Great to hear that you found it! Just make sure the group that you joined has over 500 members. The other group I tried searching for has only 70 or so members. I’m sure the LGBTQSA is going to be a blast! Don’t know what the S and the A stand for though.haha. Straight Alliance?

Yep! Except I got the first part a bit scrambled, it’s GLBTSA. I found a magazine they do, [Lambda Magazine](http://studentorgs.unc.edu/glbtsa/index.php/lambda-magazine) , reading the archives has been pretty addicting.
