Gender factor?

does UNC care about gender when it decides who gets in and who doesn't?

Nope-doing so would be illegal.

UNC is typically 60% Female and 40% Male and technically you can’t be accepted based solely on that it can be considered a “factor”. Most schools like to keep the same number of males and females admitted every year.

Not quite true. There is an ever growing disparity in college enrollment across the US. Small, highly selective schools like the Ivies where there are 20,000+ highly qualified applicants for 1200-1500 spots have the ability to more closely control their mix than do larger schools where the percentage of highly qualified applicants may be lower. That said however, even LACs like Bates, Bowdoin and Colby find themselves with ratios even more skewed than that at UNC. A few years back one or more of them was closer to 70/30 F/M.

The problem (poor choice of words) is systemic and is caused by a significantly higher number of female applicants than male applicants.

It is becoming even more pronounced in professional schools. Law schools have seen the shift for at least five to ten years but the “old boy network” that is part of med school admissions is finally also giving way. My S is a second year med student and his class was the first in the history of the school with more women than men.

My college councilor said it was an advantage being a male with good stats applying to UNC.

UNC claims gender doesn’t matter.

But who knows? The truth is probably somewhere in the middle.

It sure won’t work against you…;)

o thanks for da info guys
