Gender Gap in Vet Schools

Schools of veterinary medicine are increasingly struggling to recruit male students. The Boston Globe reported that women made up 89 percent of last year’s new vet students at Tufts University and that at Michigan State University and the University of California at Davis, women make up 88 percent and 81 percent, respectively, of incoming students.

Speaking to acquaintances at the vet school in our town, I came away with the impression that males are in demand. However, the real problem seems to be the lack of large animal vets of either sex.

A legislative aide recently told me that our state is about to start a program that will forgive all vet school expenses for grads of the vet school here who will practice in underserved rural (farming) communities for four years. (But i have yet to see an article about it in the paper...)

MSU vet program is a scandal.
So many girls (and boys) from my school with 3.5's and 24's becoming vets. Are they really competent? I think not....
Thank God I don't have any animals.
