is it like NYU where there literally is no self-contained campus and there are just random buildings integrated into DC or is it like UPenn where although smack in the middle of a city there is a self-contained campus so to speak

More like NYU - no self contained campus - integrated into a section of DC - no green spaces either. They do have a small satellite location (a bus ride away) which is green (has athletic fields, a few dorms, and some classrooms).

There’s a tiny grassy area that you could call the center of the GW campus, but the NYU analogy is apt. To get a better idea of any school’s geography, check out the campus map that’s sure to be on the website and see what Google Earth can show you.
