Hi! My name is Ella and I am a junior this year
I posted a thread similar to this about Carleton. However, after someone recommended Georgetown on my Chance Me thread, I decided to look into the school–and ABSOLUTELY LOVE IT. I cannot WAIT to visit over spring break.
But of course, the admit rate is around 16%. Woo.
So, what does Georgetown look for in an applicant? I know you have to have great ECs, test scores, etc, but is there any specific emphasis (i.e., I’ve heard Vandy is very selective about SAT/ACTs)? I read that test scores are pretty important, and I have a 32 ACT and 2050 SAT, both taken once, so there’s room for improvement. Although I really liked the ACT a lot more, so I’ll probably stick to improving that.
No SAT subject tests taken, but I do have one scheduled for January (Math I…I’m not that great at math, will that matter? Wait, should I take Math II? ughhh I hate math…) and then two planned for like April/May-ish (Spanish, Bio/M, which I think will be fine.)
I’m looking to pursue something along the lines of International relations or maybe something with medicine?? I’m torn between the the two. (Anyways, I know for sure that I’ll continue with Chinese and Russian since I finished Spanish last year, so I guess I’ll major in one of the two with the languages as a minor…? Wait…can you minor in two things??? This is very confusing…apologies.)
ALSO, if you have info on campus life/political atmosphere/price(yeah…that might be a problem…)/other stuff could you please share?? Thank you SO MUCH IN ADVANCE!!!
Math II has a more generous curve than Math I but it tests more advanced math, so take that into consideration for your SAT II tests.
Hi! I’m a current Georgetown student. I can’t really speak to the admissions process. Maybe you can try talking to someone in the admissions office when you visit in the spring?! I can, however, speak to the campus atmosphere. There is a huge variety of activities to get into! There is really something for everyone. Political atmosphere is pretty diverse… so whatever your views are you should be able to find your niche, if that’s what you’re interested in.
Also… in terms of the Math SAT subject tests… I’m a pretty strong math student in general (I’ve done well in several math classes at Gtown), but I struggled on the regular SAT Math. I did significantly better on both math subject tests (710 on Math I and Math II) than I did on the regular math… I think they are both known for having relatively good curves. Not sure if that helps at all?!
I think a big thing on the application is to show what you care about, since that will differentiate you from the rest of the pool. That said, I’m not an admissions expert. One thing that you should look into based on your interest in IR and medicine is the STIA (Science, Tech, and Int’l Affairs) major in SFS. Good luck!
Another option for you would be to look at the Faculty of Languages and Linguistics. The admission profile below seems to show their admission rate is much higher than any of the other colleges. And I think you can double-major in another area. I haven’t researched this closely, but it might play to your language strengths.
