Georgia Tech Vs College Park for Under Graduate Engineering

Hi, I have got admission from both Georgia Tech (Georgia State) Vs College Park (from Maryland State) for Under Graduate Engineering program. I am a resident of Maryland. I pay only instate fee for College Park and I got a $5000 scholardship (per year) from College Park and there is no shcolarship from Georgia Tech. From the fees perspective college park is best choice however I am hearing that Georgia Tech is better school for Engineering and a degree from Georgia Tech will have more value in the Job market. I have not decided the area of specialization yet. However, I am inclining towards Robotics. Can someone share your ideas and recommendations one vs other. Your input is much appreciated.

I’m a high school student just like you who’ s final decision includes UMD. But, i think there’s such a small gap between the 2 engineering programs that GT is not worth it. Can you help me with my thread please?

Robotics? Is that a major? Are you interested in mechanical, electrical, computer engineering, etc. Very few places offer robotics engineering, I do not think these two schools offer that major.

I believe you are mistaken about the GT degree being worth more than from University of Maryland, College Park. Most engineering employers only care if the engineering program at your school is accredited by ABET, which all the engineering programs at both schools are.

At G Tech, out-of-state room & board, tuition would come to around $42k/year. can your family afford paying 170k? What would your cost of attendance be at Maryland?

Unless there is a really big reason you need to go to Georgia Tech, stay at College Park. It is a very respectable engineering school and I congratulate you on that scholarship.

Thank you very much for your replies. I should have made this clear, but by robotics, I meant pursuing electrical and/or computer science majors so that I may later participate in a robotics program at another school for my graduate studies. Sorry about that.
Also, my in-state tuition at Maryland is $19k per year including the Presidential Scholarship. I am personally much more inclined to attend UM, as the majority of my friends are going to attend there as well, but my dad was concerned about Georgia Tech only for the employment oppurtunities.

These things are true, but the difference is not large enough to justify the big difference in cost. Maryland is known as a good engineering school and job prospects from there will be fine.

Go to each school’s website and look at the lists of companies that recruited there this year to get an idea of the potential opportunities from each.

Thanks Mr. Wallace. I’ll do that. And metsjets96, I’ve commented on your thread.

UMD has a great engineering UG experience that is very challenging. Once you get through the weeding classes, those students are as good as any in the country. The large and small companies descend on UMD at job fairs. You will enjoy the college experience at a much lower price. Go Terps.
