I'm going to major in engineering, but isn't 100% sure that's what I really want. I'm looking to go into med school in the future. In engineering, I'm looking at industrial, biomedical, or environmental (if they offer it).
It would be amazing if you could help me choose between the two schools with your comments!
I'm getting similar financial aid from both and location doesn't matter to me much. I'm looking at the overall benefit of the college and academics.

It's not that easy... Georgia Tech has an amazing program in nearly every type of engineering. They also have a ridiculous amount of funding devoted to those programs. I would say if you are considering any type of liberal arts education then choose Northwestern but its a tough choice if you just enjoy premed/engineering.

GTech is top-notched in engineering. On the other hand, NU is well-ranked in industrial engineering and biomedical--6th and 12th. Since you are not 100% sure about engineering, I'd pick NU as it's not shabby in what you want to major in and is definitely better in most other non-engineering fields.

so if ultimately I want to go on to a med school, do Northwestern?
I have some more subsequent questions...
I know that Northwestern is strong in the field of journalism and management. Is it known for anything else in particular?
What is the general consensus in which people view Northwestern?
and How is the international studies program at Northwestern?
If you can answer any of these questions for me, I would be very grateful :)

** What is the general consensus in which people view Northwestern?**

You got that right-NW is primarily known for journalism & its business school. Other than that, its basically Chicago-lite. OBTW, you should know GT has slightly more nerdy studious types, and NW is consisted of slightly more preppy happy student body.

GT is known as one of powerhouse engineering schools. In particular, GTs AE is one of three Centers of Excellence in Rotorcraft Research & Education designated by the U.S. Army; other two being UMCP & Penn State.

Basically Lex got it right. Go to GT if youre into engineering. Otherwise, go to NW.

I wouldn't listen to Rabban on matters re: Northwestern. He has a history of putting it down. E.g. anecdotal put-downs, ("Chicago-lite,") anecdotal UChicago worship, (anyone remember Rabban's uncle?) Also, when faced with statistics that refute his opinions, he continues to cling doggedly to them.

In this post, he states that NU is "known primarily for business and journalism." This truth is: NU features dozens of top ten programs, (i.e. theater, art history, etc.) It's not Chicago-lite--despite Rabban's desire to portray it as such... It's like calling Yale 'Harvard-lite.' Just B.s.

NU's art history, econ, and chemistry are ranked in the top-10. It's material science is #1 or #2 in the country. Many humanities and social sciences depts are in the top-20. It's theater/film/performing arts/education are in the top-10. So it's definitely much more than just journalism & management. It's one of the most targeted schools by elite firms.

Well, you'd have to answer that yourself. I personally don't think those "other benefits" are that special. But the money award is the one that makes the most difference. That's between you and your family.

honestly, I am not trying to sound rude. The fact that you cannot convince yourself that NU is a better school (and it is by almost any standard, except for the fact that Georgia Tech has a higher ranked engineering program), then you should go to Georgia Tech. One more spot for someone who actually wants to go from the waitlist will open.

And btw, Purdue's engineering program is ranked higher than most schools including the likes of Duke, Columbia, Penn, Northwestern. Do you think someone should choose Purdue over these schools?

When you guys quote various rankings of undergrad departments, what is (are) your source(s)? I am interested in the methodology of these rankings and whether they are as pathetic and misapplied as the Peer Assessment scoring is for determining a school's quality.

^^ engineering rankings are 100% peer assessment score; they are kind of a joke. You can't really rely on them. Of course a tech school is going to have a higher PA for its engineering program when TECH is in the name of the school.
