I was accepted to Georgia Tech and Ohio State, and I’m caught between these two schools. For Georgia Tech, I was accepted into the biomedical engineering major which I know is a really good program. For OSU, I was accepted into the biomedical engineering pre-major, and I would have to apply for the major at the end of freshman year. If I was only going off of academics, I think Georgia Tech would be my obvious choice, but I’m not sure if I will stick to biomedical engineering. If I go to Georgia Tech, I feel like I would have to major in something related to engineering, because that’s what it’s mostly known for whereas at OSU, I feel like I could major in anything and not feel obligated to major in specifically one field.
Georgia Tech (oos) is $15k more expensive every year than OSU (in state), so cost is a factor, but my parents only care about rankings so to them cost doesn’t matter. I’m in the Honors program at OSU, but I haven’t heard about Honors for Georgia Tech.
After college I think I want to go to medical school or graduate school, so that is also a factor in my decision.
Tbh, at the end of the day, I’m just scared and nervous to go to (any) college in general.
That’s a tough decision. Sorry this is no help, but I would say go with your heart. Both are great schools. Whichever one you like best will be best for you. (To me that sounds like OSU)
Normally I would lean GT, but in your shoes I’d probably lean tOSU.
If you’re thinking pre-med, you’ll want as high a GPA as possible. You’ll also want to keep your undergrad costs as low as possible. Will your parents help you with med school if you save them some $$ for undergrad?
Best wishes with your decision!
Ohio State’s instate tuition is about $10k per year.
Georgia Tech’s OOS tuition is about $33k per year.
So there’s more than a $15k difference. The difference is about $23k per year. The difference will be about $100k over 4 years.
Plus, you’ll have higher travel costs with GT.
@SouthFloridaMom9 My parents say they will help me financially with med school no matter where I go.
@mom2collegekids I got $12k in financial aid from Georgia Tech for the 2016-2017 school year. I know it will vary year to year, but I’m estimating overall it will be around $15k difference.
Thanks for the input! Very much appreciated!
OP you want to limit UG debt. And you don’t need to study biomed eng to go to med school. What you need to do is have a very strong GPA and take the courses needed for med school. How do you know you want to study biomed eng? Almost every student we know that started biomed eng switched out because they found something they liked better and which they had a better aptitude.
It doesn’t sound like you have a strong grasp on what everything will be costing.
If I was your parent, I would say go to OSU. From a cost/benefit standpoint and SWAN (sleep well at night, with keeping costs down).
My husband goes to OSU for Electrical Engineering and now wants to get into GT. He has been disappointed with how bookish OSU is. GT for sure.
