My S is interested in Earth Science/Meterology/Geology disciplines as college majors, but really has no idea of what career path he will eventually pursue with such a degree. I am wondering if there are some engineering fields that would align with his interests that would make him more employable and with better salary potential than a geoscience degree? Thank you for any insight--I have absolutely no knowledge of engineering.

You could look into Mining Engineering or Petroleum Engineering. I saw somewhere online that Petroleum Engineers were getting starting salaries in the low 90’s.

We tried to lead my daughter that way with no luck. Our family is filled with engineers (chemical, mechanical, ocean, civil, fire protection). She thought engineering was too boring and is a sophomore this year studying Geology. She liked the idea of working outside more than in an office. We made it clear that without pursuing a Masters Degree, her employment opportunities would be limited. She is planning on continuing after getting her BS.

Good luck!

Oh, and Environmental Engineering.

Kville- thanks for the response. I saw a recent study that cited petroleum engineering as the #1 most valuable BS degree. My son’s response? “I don’t want to live in Texas.” Okay then…

Geotechnial Engineering would likely most closly align with his interests

Geosciences on itelf is a very employable career, no need to push him into an engineering path
