I am 17 years old and from germany . I am doing track and field (discuss) and I would like to get a scholarship for a good American university such as Stanford. I throw about 45meters. How can I apply and is it realistic to get a scholarship?
It’s not realistic to get a scholarship to Stanford unless you are absolutely top of your sport and have good grades (and top test scores, if required at that time.)
Track and field scholarships are shared among teammates, and getting a big one is very very hard to do
Look at NCAA champs last year for all divisions. Top winners were around 65m.
Are you on the Jr National or U19 team AND expecting a 1.1-1.2 for Abitur?
Stanford is unrealistic unless you improve a lot this summer (and even then, they’re not a program that dedicates very many of their scholarship funds to the throws; they’re a distance focused program).
Go to tfrrs.org to look at performance lists by conference to get an idea of schools that might be a better fit, then email those coaches. Honestly, I’d be surprised if someone throwing in that range got much scholarship interest but you might find a few coaches at low level D1 or D2 teams that let you walk on or give a very small scholarship.
Track scholarships are very tough to get. D1 schools only get 12.6 scholarships for the entire team and not all programs are fully funded. Coaches divide them up with an eye toward maximizing points at the conference or national meet. Some of the top HS boys in the US go to colleges on scholarships of 25% or less.
