Getting a Research Opportunity?

So, I realize this is pretty late, but... meh.

Anyway, I applied to PROMYS about 3 weeks ago; they said I'd be getting a response in within a week, so I'm crossing my fingers. If I get in... I'm def going. But now, I realize I need to get something to do should I not get in [I'd apply to AMSP late, but parents say no].

I really want to do research this summer if I can, as it seems really... cool [and more importantly, mandatory science fair next year Dx]. I was reading CC threads, and a lot of them said to email professors at a local university [for me, that would be the University of Delaware] and ask them about it. But like, I don't really know who I should email. I don't know what I'd want to research... meh. Like, should I just find professors in varied departments and ask them about it?

If it helps, I'm going to be a 10th grader next year. And to anyone who actually replies and helps me, thank you!!

b+u+m+p=…bump?

guess who didn’t get in…
bump?

Ok before you email any professors, I strongly encourage you to do a little research on what he is studying. Then when you email him/her, you would actually have something to write about rather than the ubiquitous “Can you offer me an internship?”. I heard a lot of success stories about students who read a lot of the professor’s published journals/articles and emailed them about building on to it. And most importantly, pick something that you would like to study!!! This is just the basics… but I hope this advice helps.
