Thanks for taking the time to answer. Are there any accountants out there who graduated(bachelors) recently(or somewhat recently like up to 5 years ago) and are now working? Also what University did you graduate from? How is the market for accountants? Also if you work/worked at a big 4 firm, how difficult was it for you to get a job? Can you guys also give me some tips for getting the big 4’s attention besides joining beta alpha psi and going to all the professional meetings and meet the firms? I know some of this information, but it would be nice to update my information. Thanks again.
I can’t really speak from experience but let me just list the generic answers that pretty much end up on 90% of questions on here. That way when someone knowledgeable does come around to help you, they can provide further information. Just wanna note, although I say this information is generic, it’s still very effective and accurate.
- Go talk to your advisers at your school to find out which firms are hiring from your school.
- Go to job/career fairs and ask the potential employers what they're looking for or if they have any tips.
- You need to focus on your GPA and obtaining an internship for one of these firms because that's the easiest way to guarantee a job after graduation.
As for your specific questions;
- I looked at 5 public schools in Georgia the employment rate of graduating accounting majors was averaged at 83% for 2014 and 79% for 2013 working in a business-related field. I’d assume you’d find better % at more prestigious schools.
- Haven’t graduated yet
- According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the job outlook for 2012-2022 is expected to increase 13% which is about average among all occupations. Granted from countless readings and testimonies I’ve read throughout the internet, the job outlook between a CPA and a non-CPA accountant is quite different. An accountant with a CPA and some relevant work experience is probably a candidate for having the best job outlook.
- I haven’t…yet xD
- I would say having any relevant internships or work experience. I mean even saying you did some book-keeping for a few months for a small company is probably something that will help distinguish you among the dozens of applicants you are competing against.
