So last year I was unsuccessful at getting an internship. I'll be a junior at Purdue, my GPA is a 3.45, I'm in mechanical and have not had an intern/co-op position before. Last year was ridiculous though, I have a friend who will be a senior in ME, had an internship at Siemens for 2 years and couldn't get one for this summer. Any tips on getting an internship? And do you think the market will be better than last year?

Have you talked with the career center at your school? They should be able to offer you some solid advice!

I think the market will be better this school year that last year. Many companies have had to eliminate their internships and co-op programs. Definitely stop by your career office and seize every available opportunity. Look for on campus jobs working under a professor assisting with research. It’s a great way to gain experience and developing relationships with them just in case you need a recommendation down the line.

Ha, you can have mine. I’m quitting in three weeks.

I have my resume on the Purdue online career server, but it was just tough to get one last year because of the recession. We also have an industrial roundtable towards the beginning of the fall semester where TONS of companies come to recruit.

Do you have any networking resources? These include parents, relatives, neighbors, parents and relatives of classmates, etc. Concur on the tough economy out there.
