One path I was thinking of doing was to get an MBA from a school that doesn’t require full time work experience ( I have plenty of part time experience at retail stores ) and then going for a phd or another masters in economics . I was wondering is that worth it ? Or is it good enough to just have one or the other ?
What is you career goal? it sounds like you just want to accumulate degrees.
Your plan will not help in academia or the job market.
@TomSrOfBoston I feel like I want to do something that impacts the world or society in a positive way . I was looking into maybe being a consultant at the UN or some international organization to help less privileged areas of the world . Or maybe consult in health care industry to help policy or costs .
An hour earlier you posted about getting a master’s in engineering.
You do not need a half dozen degrees to help the world.
@TomSrOfBoston obviously I don’t want to go for all those degrees , I am trying to make a decision on which one to go for so I am trying to get people’s perspectives and opinions so I can come to a final decision . These are just scenarios I am exploring .
Agree that you don’t need to go on to a grad econ program after an MBA. If you decide in college that you love econ , math and statistics, then go to econ grad school. I think that PhD economists are more likely to have MPPs rather than MBAs if they want to work in international development or health policy.
In another thread, you mentioned that you were bored of economics and that you have only taken calculus 1. Economics at the doctoral level is math-heavy.
You don’t need both degrees to do what you want (or either, really). What you should do, though, is define more clearly what it is you want to do before you spend the time and/or money earning a graduate degree. You don’t want to earn one only to realize that you really need something else. With a BA in economics you can already do something related to the two areas you posed, so why not try to find work in one of those fields to clarify what your eventual goals and potential grad school needs are?
