Getting into a top MBA school

I want to do something business oriented with my life. Right now I am a student at UT Austin but the business program is very difficult to get into. I also heard that if I wanted to get an MBA, business doesn't necessarily have to be my undergraduate major.

If I didn't do business, what else would be good?

I was thinking undergrad in economics with a minor in business. What jobs opportunities would I be able to fulfill with an economics degree? Similar to those who have business degrees?

Would communication be acceptable, or would it be better to stick with economics?

These would be my "preferred" MBA programs: UT Austin (McCombs), UC Berkley, NYU, MIT, SMU, Yale, USC, USLA. I know these are "top" schools so I would obviously have to get a good job and have experience but I just don't want to be stuck with an "economics" degree if that will not get me job opportunities...or will it? Some input would be appreciated!

My cousin became a VP of a Fortune 500 before the age of 35 with a 2.0 GPA and an undergrad degree in economics from UT. Obviously, you will not receive as many opportunities but the cream will rise to the top…you just have to work your ass off. I think econ makes sense, and I think you will likely need to do a bit more footwork than McCombs students in order to land a good job.
