Getting into CMU?

Hi. I’m a junior in high school and I’ve wanted to go to CMU for all my life. I am a member of a FRC robotics team and a member of an orchestra for 8 years. I plan to do an internship this summer, and I’ve been working on an app. I also am planning to start a science camp for all girls over summer. My grades are a mix of b+, a-, and a’s. I have a weighted GPA of 4.53.

What are my chances of getting into CMU for engineering?

Seems like you have a good start! Have you taken your ACT/SAT yet? Do you have a class rank?

The factors CMU regards as “Very Important” when making admissions decisions are:

  • Rigor of Secondary School Record – with a 4.53 weighted GPA, you have been taking several honors/AP classes
  • Academic GPA - 4.53 is very good
  • Standardized Tests - ??
  • Class Rank - ??

The historical admission rate for women is ~30%, so it’s going to be very competitive.
Good luck!

with a 34+ 1540+ I would say basically a lock
32-34 1500+ would give a decent shot
anything lower than 32 or less than 1500 would make it tough

So I got a bad SAT grade so I’m redoing it in march. So Fingers crossed  I am ranked 2nd in my school, but no one in my school has ever gotten into CMU in the last 5years

@SiennaH doesn’t mean you can’t be the first! One of my roommates was the first to get into CMU from his school as well in the last few years. Also CMU has a lot of FRC alums!

What program are you applying to in particular? And @magtf1 – yes grades are important, but I can guarantee you that CMU looks at other things as well, or I never would have gotten in. Also standardized tests are a “check off” as long as you get in one of the high percentiles (>95% usually) , your actual score really doesnt matter.

Statistically the top 10% of CMU applications to many of the competitive programs are quite similar.
