Getting into Finance/Consulting with an Economics Degree

Hey,
I will attend one of the very best economics programms (Think Harvard, Chicago, MIT, Yale) in the nation this fall.
How are chances of getting a job in finance or consulting with an economics degree as opposed to business and finance majors from Top 30 schools (think Georgetown, Berkeley, Villanova, NYU, etc.)

Very, very good. Top econ programs are easily equal to top business programs for job placement.

I would think that if you’re talking about high profile consulting and investment banking, your ability to break in will be based more off of connections and your pedigree than what you majored in, unless you’re trying to be a quant. In fact, I’d be willing to bet that if you networked a lot, even your pedigree won’t matter as much as long as you have some solid references backing you up.

Just go to your top college (congratulations btw), and network your ass off. From what I’ve read, connections are the main reason why those top schools are vital for those careers anyway.

Depends where you are. Harvard is arguably the best school for banking and consulting recruiting. I know MIT does very well for consulting, but not 100% sold on banking (though you’ll be in a much better position than 99.9% of college students). I don’t know too much about Yale and Chicago, but am under the impression that they are also better situated to put you in a great consulting job than a great finance job.
