Hi -
We visited Hamilton last week and loved it!

I'd like to get a sense of how easy it is to get off campus. We learned that there is a shuttle that goes to "downtown" Clinton and to some local shopping center. How often do the shuttles run? Do you summon them, or do they just stop at designated locations at scheduled intervals?

How big is that local shopping center? For instance, are there restaurants and movies?

Hi, I am going to Hamilton this year too, I found that the town is very close by, some small restaurants etc. More shopping is in Utica and the big mall is in Syracuse. On Hamilton's web site just type in shuttle in the search box and a 2008-9 schedule will pop up. Good luck
Erin

Erin, thanks! I did find a shuttle to Syracuse & Albany on their website, just not the daily one to Clinton & the shopping mall. I'll look again!

I hope you enjoy Hamilton. we really enjoyed our visit; seems like a great school.

Hi - saw your thread and thought maybe I could help as I live about 10 minutes from Clinton and am very familiar with surrounding areas. The "downtown" is probably the village green area at the center of town - has boutiques, several eateries, art gallery/coffeehouse, natural food store, card/gift shop. There's a subway, dollar general, and good pizzeria called O'Scugnizzo's in a little area behind the post office (closer to the college). As far as I know, there's still a very tiny movie house on the far sidestreet off the square - I'd say all of this is less than a mile from Hamilton. In fact once you're down the hill it's just a nice stroll. Getting back up the hill might be a different story!

The local Hannaford market is the only supermarket in town, but it's pretty good. There's a movie rental place, CVS drugs, and liquor store in the same plaza and a McDonald's next door.

The Target is in New Hartford at Sangertown Square Mall, about 10 minutes away. It's not a huge mall but has Macy's, AE, Penney's and the usual things. New Hartford's Commercial Drive area, which Sangertown is on, also has a Walmart shopping center with Best Buy, Barnes & Noble, Staples, Panera Bread, etc. There are several other shopping centers on this road, including one with a fairly new Marquee Cinema which most people use for moviegoing.

Syracuse is about 45 minutes away from Clinton, but an easy drive if you get on the NYS Thruway in Westmoreland, just 10 minutes north of Clinton. Utica doesn't have much in the way of shopping districts anymore but does have some interesting events and restaurants. There are parts of Utica you'll want to avoid though so please ask a local before venturing too far off the main roads!

Hope that's helpful...the people in Clinton really are very decent and I'm sure you'll have a good experience there.

sk8rmom, thanks! When we visited, we loved a restaurant in downtown Clinton called Nora's or Nola's - or something like that. A woman's name. And we happened to visit when a band was playing in the little town square, so it was very quaint; we loved it!
