I will be flying in because I live a long way from Dartmouth. What is the best city to go get all the crap I'll need for my room (lamps, etc)? I know that Manchester, Concord, Burlington (VT), and some other places are fairly close.

Factoring in both distance and selection of stores and stuff, what is the best/most convenient?

If you are flying into Manchester, there is a large mall right there, as well as tons of strip type malls. You are still 90 minutes or so away from Dartmouth. West Lebanon is the best shoppng closest to Hanover, only 10 or 15 minutes to the south. Traffic is nasty (for a small town), but the best stores are there (WalMart!!). I've not been there recently, but that is where I usually went for any serious purchases. Honestly, mail order became my number one shopping choice during my years there.

I'm envious, Hanover is a little slice of Heaven in my book (outside of the poor shopping optons).

We did the following (also did not want to haul up a lot of stuff). Form my house we sent via UPS, a trunk and a few boxes. The post office will take stuff beginning early September and will hold it for you. In addition we also began ordering stuff on-line and having it mailed directly to D at school (no sales tax in NH and some times we got free shippping).

When you get your room assignment you wil also receive your Hinman Box number.

Just mail it to your self

If you can move in right after your DOC trip, then you can go over to the post office (located in Hopkins Center) pick up your stuff and take it back to your room. If you are driving, just put in the car and drive it over to your dorm. If not don't forget to bring a big heavy duty luggage carrier. Some parents had even rented hand carts from U-haul to take stuff across campus.

We (the parents) are flying into Manchester. Just off the interstate, on the way to Hanover, in Concord is a shopping strip with BB&B, Target and Walmart. We are going up early enough to allow an extra day to do some shopping in this area. It is about 50 miles back to Concord, but my daughter likes Target, and the West Leb Walmart will be packed, I'm sure.

Sybbie's idea of mailing stuff is good, as well. We have tried to avoid buying things, since we have almost 10% sales tax here. Anything we buy in NH will save us 10%, plus the cost of shipping. But, we've found some really good bargains on linens, and we will mail more than we first anticipated.

We have almost 10 % sales tax here, too. If I order something and ship it, to Dartmouth, will I have to pay sales tax since my billing address is in TN?

IvyH2O - I specifically asked this question at BB&B - they have a program like a bridal registry, but Pack and Hold for college. You go to the store, walk around and select your items, they are scanned into the system under a special Pack and Hold "setting", then the items are collected and held for pick-up at the store near the college. You do not pay until you pick up i.e., no sales tax. I asked very specifically, and explained to the assistant why I wanted to know, about the no sales tax in NH.
However, we found some sheets so cheap at LNT and Ross, that we just bought them - I couldn't get them online or through pack and hold that inexpensively.

You can start shipping things the beginning of September probably after labor day since the UGA arrive on 9/6 . Limited storage space and the possibility of loss or damage to packages stored for extended periods forces the Hinman Post Office staff to return all packages to the sender that are not picked up within 15 days after receipt of notice. You also may want ot give your self enough time that if you are shipping via UPS that you have time to check on line to make sure that your packages have arrived.
