Have any of you been moved to give a gift (cash) to a private music teacher who you feel is responsible giving your son or daughter the extra help needed to get into a college music career?

In celebration of his acceptance to his first choice school?

I am thinking an amount approximately 5 times the usual cost of one lesson...

I think most music teachers would be very appreciative of your sentiment and generosity. I wonder if the outright gift would have tax consequences, and if it could be somehow mitigated as a gift certificate?

I was also wondering about a gift for my D’s trombone teacher. She has really blossomed with him. He is well off financially and even offers an incentive to his students: if they make All State, they don’t have to pay him for lessons any longer. So cash would not be appropriate, but I wanted him to have something from her. Suggestions? He is a retired symphony player but still is active in a local community orchestra, band and jazz band.

One of my favorite places to look for a gift is winecountrygiftbaskets.com. Flowers are also appropriate or a maybe a gift card to a music store.
