Hi,
Does anyone know if for example my parents write a check to x college for my kid if they have to pay the gift tax if over 12,000? I thought I read somewhere that as the long as the check was written directly to the college they would not pay gift tax... Any truth to that?

Payments to college of tuition are not taxable gifts, no matter who pays.

Exceptions:
Payments for tuition or medical care (including health insurance) for other individuals, provided that the payments are made directly to the educational institution, hospital/doctor, or insurance company. Reimbursing someone else for these expenses doesn’t count. (IRC Section 2503(e).)
