“Girl Dinner” - Making a Snack Plate A Meal

Thanks to a thread on here- starting last summer we had many different couples- one at a time over on our deck for ‘snacks and drinks’. Many of the couples we had not seen for years. This was very very successful.

You could call it a charcuterie but I chose to call it snacks. The plate on this article look a lot like ours but we added prosciutto as the meat. The guys and girls were plenty filled. The key I would say-was getting very different cheeses from all over the world, labeling them and then taste testing them. We also had very different beers- Radler’s from Germany, Peroni from Italy, etc. Tried not to have anything on the plate domestic. We shopped at a local grocery store that had an extensive cheese counter with all the extras we needed.

Don’t apologize, I think it’s ridiculous too!

If none of our kids are home, my husband and I will often lean in to a dinner of wine and cheese. A little French bread with oil and we’re all set.

I’m a barbarian. I just grab a broccoli or cauliflower floret from the precut bag or fresh berries from the the carton each time I open the fridge. No plate.

Fridge to mouth cuisine.

Saves on dishwasher wear and tear, and water, too!

Hummus, baby carrots, olives, some type of hard cheese (Manchego, Pag, or Aged Cheddar), and crackers. I’m picky about crackers and like Carr’s Original Table Water Crackers or Fire Hook Sea Salt Crackers–mostly I like plain crackers.

I wou,d do it in a great while if I had a very large previous meal, otherwise I would need a full 3 meal - protein and veggie. I know some people may think soup and bread is a meal, but to me it’s just appetizer.

Those Firehook crackers would be my favorite except for the price!

Personally this is the reason for leftovers. And we have great leftovers on purpose.
Little bit of this, little bit of that…

Leftovers are their own category of great!

A friend made a comment “Summertime meals: I don’t cook, I just arrange things on a plate”. :joy:

I eat this way for lunch many days and on the weekends H and I take a picnic like this with wine to our secret place overlooking the ocean.

After ready this thread I got served the following ad in my area!

I don’t eat cheese. I substitute with fruits instead. And no, I need to eat a meal, not a snack plate.

I like the British term for it, a “picky plate.”

My husband likes a “real” dinner most of the time. I am more than happy with a plate of cheese, cured meat or some prosciutto, olives, marinated bits and bobs, baguette slices, good olive oil and balsamic, etc.

Lately I’ve been enjoying caprese salad, toasted, sliced baguette, mixed olives, and prosciutto with a glass of wine or maybe a cocktail. I find that because I eat a lot slower this way, I actually eat less.

I live near a couple of local groceries with great deli departments so finding things isn’t a problem.

Oh, and I found a wonderful lemon and honey Wensleydale cheese at Costco. Almost a dessert.

Y’all are so good!
My occasional “snack plate “ might be more of a dessert plate - cookies and ice cream, or fruit and whipped cream, or pb and chocolate🤣
(And that’s probably why I need to pay more attention to lowering my cholesterol).

I had that cheese - yum!

This is the standard lunch in our house. Pickled vegetables, fresh raw vegetables, bits of leftovers, salami, various cheeses, various crackers, olives. One thing that’s really yummy is a smoked ricotta we get from the Farmer’s Market. I put it on half a mini-bagel, crackers, vegetables etc. If you can run it under a broiler it’s even better.

Totally. I’m going to be blunt here…it’s a stupid and moronic term. And it’s a bit sexist, too.

I mean…hello? Italians have been doing this sort of thing forever. Have none of those tiktok’ers heard of antipasto before? Charcuterie boards?

But no…now we’re calling it something totally lame like “girl dinner”?! Ugh, please. :rage:

When my friend w/celiac disease comes over for dinner and we put out appetizers, I set out a tray of stuff like this (without crackers or bread, of course).

ANY other name would be better. Antipasto plate, charcuterie board, keto plate (?), paleo, I don’t know…caveman snacks…ANYTHING but ‘girl dinner.’

Yeah, I call it “protein plate”: a packet of tuna or salmon in olive oil, a boiled duck egg, pickled beets, some tomatoes or broccoli, sometimes a hard cheese. I don’t think I’m breaking any ground there.

Gen Z are a little self involved. They think they invented everything. Not surprising girls on tik tok would call this a girl dinner without realizing people have been eating like this forever. My daughter couldn’t wait to introduce me to this singer she found, Whitney Houston… and she thought her mom jeans were very cutting edge. :joy:

It has already been noted at least twice that this name was just the chosen name of the article. Shouldn’t have to affect the content on the thread.

The article does also address the origin of the name and some appropriate reasons behind the coined name - that are not “against” women - or men. Apparently men tik tok-ers need to get in the snack plate ring!
