ok, kinda late, but better late than never. lol. this is for girls going to southern schools. i'm going to school in va, not sure it's really southern weather, but....

What types of clothing should I bring for summer/fall/winter? Should I go shopping for winter now or just wait to Thanksgiving break to bring winter clothes when it gets colder?

The coldest months are December/January/February, avg. temps probably around 30 degrees, though it fluctuates pretty frequently from 20 - 40.

I'm kind of unique and really don't have much of a winter style, haha. My "winter clothes" consist of jeans+sweatshirt up until around Thanksgiving; then I wear my wool varsity jacket over the sweatshirt...

So, I guess the answer would be pack clothes for 50-60 degree weather, like sweatshirt, jeans, light jacket (it can get really cold at night still, especially in October...), but save bringing out the ski jackets and other winter gear for after break.

I live in MD and I wouldn't consider VA a southern state. Right now, I wear jeans and t-shirts/tanks every day. In the fall and winter, I switch to long-sleeve shirts, and when it gets in the 40-30s or it's snowing (a real rarity) I add hoodies and coats. flgirl is right, it all depends on how frequently you want to do laundry. Where are you going to school?

Unless you live in Northern Canada or something, just wear normal clothes...it's not that hot or that cold in VA.

I haven't really decided for sure yet since I still have a while till I move in, but I'm going to school in Northern Louisiana (exact same weather as East Texas where I live now) and I'm probably bringing four/five pair of jeans, four/five pair of shorts (sleep-shorts not included), a couple skirts, a bunch of t-shirts, a good number of tank-topish shirts, a good bit of nicer shirts, a pair of dress pants, two dress shirts, and a few sweatshirts and long sleeve shirts to layer with for winter...oh, and lots of shoes (including about 6 pair of flip flops).

That may sound like a lot, but I'm in a triple with only one roommate so we have three closets and three sets of drawers to share.

Bring fall/spring clothes for the winter. Bring a few winter clothes and a good coat if you tend to get cold. Also, consider how often you'll really be outside. I would more worry about the summer - May can get very warm - so bring lots of skirts and light shirts.

it also really depends on how harsh the winter gets (relatively). last year for me it snowed, but really wasnt all that cold. This year it didnt snow but was really really cold. but im also from fl, so...its all relative.
I mean it snows and im dressed up like Nanuk of the North!

If you are going to UVa, Richmond, W&L etc. you will want sundresses or cute skirts for football weekends. From what I've heard, the students at W&M and Tech don't dress up for games.

well....certain girls dress up at our games...but im not one of them...we supposedly have a tradition of "dressing up" but i have yet to see it...

I've been known to go out in shorts, a t-shirt, and flip-flops in the snow. Mostly to get the paper/mail (I live in the boonies, so my driveway's not all that short either).

::edit::

...and dressing up to go to football games?! That's just sad in a way.

The flip flops make a winter outfit extra special. That's why I go full out with the shorts and t-shirt (though sometimes I also wear a sweatshirt). It shows my true dedication to getting pneumonia.
