thanks guys! i will most likely do tennis!

Number 1 out of a 1000. Sounds very tempting.

I was only 1 out of 400.

But yah, go for tennis. Keep in mind, on graduation day when another guy goes up to give his speech, you might regret it…or not.

Good luck both ways! I’m sure you’ll do fine.

I wonder how many of you guys are valedictorians or at least really, really up there.

It’s nice to be valedictorian. But selective colleges are less interested in rank per se than they are in the rigor of your courseload and how well you did. If you miss out on top rank because you took tennis (presumably an unweighted grade) while somebody else took a couple more weighted classes, that is unlikely to have any impact on your college admissions.

Just to add my own two cents, being part of a sports team - especially varsity - can really give you a memorable high school experience. I would take the opportunity in a heart beat, especially considering all of the friends you’ll make, fitness you’ll gain, and fun experiences you’ll get to cherish forever. As a plus, I think it would look better to selective colleges that you are able to maintain a high rank with extensive extracurricular commitments rather than simply a high rank by itself. In this case - especially if you go to a reputable school - the distinction between upper ranks is less important than your application’s diversity. And if you have the talent to be on a varsity team, why not?

PS Regardless of if you make captain or not, I think that the fact that your on a varsity team signals that you have at the minimum quite a bit of talent in your sport.

Hmm…I had no idea Varsity sports were that important. I shall consider continuing track but I’ve always considered valedictorian as more than sports. It sounds weird just saying that varsity track is more important… I mean, there’s still I chance that the OP could do both (and I could as well). @LaTina…I’m currently ranked #1 and have been since the beginning of freshman year but small class (only around 140) which kind of sucks

P.S. Oh I would def def def NOT make captain…I’m slow as Christmas :)

Do what you like. Stop trying to be a college pleaser. If you’re passionate about tennis more, go for it. However if your area of interest is more relevant (and your more into) the AP classes, then there you go. You can’t go wrong with doing what you feel strongest about.

Why don’t you ask the coach if you can be on the team, but not have it go on your transcript?

My Ac Dec Coach was fine with it.

^ ACADEMIC DECATHLON!!! YAY :)!!! Haha I was going to do the same thing with orchestra simply because I didn’t have room in my schedule.
