In the hustle and bustle of picking out the "perfect" school, I wanted to know of cases where you got turned down by your dream school but you are glad because you performed or liked the other school better...

Well, at first for me, JHU seemed like the perfect school, but after I found another school on another list, it stood out for me, and I couldn’t get enough of it for 2 weeks and I demanded my dad take me to see it. And he did. And I loved it. I hope I get in there!

My D1 (graduated from college this spring) did not get into Georgetown, her first choice five years ago. She ended up going to an LAC ranked about 40th with excellent merit money. She graduated Phi Beta Kappa this spring and has a job (with benefits ) that she loves. She got some fabulous internships, studied abroad in a very unique location, and her senior thesis was submitted by her college to a contest for the top thesis in her subject nationwide (first time in many years that they have submitted a thesis to this competition).

She says now that the admissions people knew what they were doing, and it is best that she did not get into Georgetown. She thinks she would not have been as happy, and was able to take full advantage of the opportunities at the school she did attend. It would have cost more (both because of the lack of merit aid and the high spending money cost of going to school in a big city). Likely her grades would have been middle of the pack, which would not position her well for grad school. So that is one student who is glad she did not get accepted.
