Will applying to a GPHS major Early Decision in CALS increase my chances of getting in if my stats are subpar? I wrote a good essay and supplemental and actually enjoy the field of global and public health (even took a 2 week summer course at USC on GPHS). Please let me know!!

So you’re asking if that particular major will increase your chances of getting in, despite having subpar stats? No, probably not. But if that’s the major you’re interested in, apply. If not, apply to a different major.
@Ranza123 I am very interested in the major itself; I am not saying that I am applying to that specific major to increase my chances. I figured that since GPHS is new to CALS, less people would apply thus giving me a greater chance. I wrote both of my essays extremely well and expect to have really good recs. I have heard the Cornell looks for more of a ‘fit’ when it comes to admissions. I have also demonstrated that I am pursuing my interests in GPHS outside of school. Will my ‘fit’ compensate for decent stats?
Fit is definitely important at Cornell, so that will help you. I’m not sure that the fact that it’s a new major will help; they’re offering it in both Human Ecology and CALS so they seem to anticipate a lot of students wanting to apply.
@Ranza123 hmm, I guess I see your point! Do you know what the difference of that major is in CALS rather than HE? I applied to CALS because I am more interested in the natural and life sciences, however when I scoured cornell’s website I could not seem to see the difference between GPHS in CALS or HE…
From the looks of it, the courses for the major are the same (NS courses that, from what I hear, are really great). The biggest difference will probably be the college requirements for CALS vs. Human Ecology.
@Ranza123 I appreciate your help!
