I am a National Merit Semi-finalist from Albuquerque, New Mexico. I have been offered a full-ride to the local college, the University of New Mexico, which is right in Albuquerque. The issue is, I've also been accepted to Fordham in NY. I think i want to study medicine, and UNM has a wonderful medical program, but ever since i was younger I've always wanted to go to school out of state. Fordham has offered me a full-tuition scholarship, but the room and board fees are close to $15,000. My mom also doesn't like the idea of me living in New York, but I find the idea appealing.

So, what should I do? I know going to school for free is great, and I will already rack up fees for medical school, but I just hate the idea of settling because of money. Does this make sense?

Unfortunately for almost everyone, money is part of the equation when choosing a college. If you have a free ride at a good school and are looking at big bills ahead for med school, it is easy to see why it is a very attractive choice. Only you and your family can decide the best answer for your situation. Sounds like you have a good problem to have. Congratulations

I you are unsure about wanting to study medicine, or if you would like to supplement your science education with a strong liberal arts experience, consider Fordham. And I think you’re right about wanting to study in New York – my education has greatly benefited from all of the opportunities found in NYC. The internships, lectures, museums, concerts, etc. define the Fordham experience in a very special way.

Still, while Fordham does have an excellent medical school placement record, its science programs could be improved. Fordham does have plans to expand and develop its science programs, but this could take several years to accomplish.

15,000/per year is a relatively modest amount to pay for an undergrad degree and I would argue that it is worth it for the New York experience (although I am unfamiliar with Albuquerque – it may provide similar opportunities). However, because UNM’s program may be better than Fordham’s and med school debt is looming, you definitely have a difficult decision to make.

With R & B of 15k, that’s more than 60k for 4 yr and don’t forget these are going to increase during the time you are in school.

Are your parents/you able to pay it? If you have to borrow it, you will go to med school, which is very expensive, owing more than 60k.

However, paying only 15k or so per year would be considered a steal by many families.

Then, there is the excdellence you say UNM has in the sciences & the med school. If you go there and lead your class, use the honors program, etc you might be able to go to med school in NY (or some other city you like as well). By then Mom will have gotten used to you being out of the house, and may be ready to brag about your going to a NY med school!

You & your parents have some serious talking & thinking to do.

Compare their performance on the MCATS. I agree 100% with people that you could do medical school out of state instead. $60K is a lot of money when you are looking at 4 years of med school afterwards.
