As a New Yorker, having lived through 911, the phrase “God spoke to me” is just not funny; not even 11 years after the fact. More importantly, I don’t think those words would be funny to the Dean of Columbia Admissions reading your post. I just hope you have disguised your identity enough that your admissions decision is not rescinded.

I am actually a very devout Christian and have been praying a lot over this this entire admissions process period. Not, “Oh God let the Harvard admissions staff like my app and accept me”, but just that he leads me to a college that I will enjoy and where I will be able to do his will do the fullest, wherever that may be. These days God doesn’t open up the heavens and speak to us, but I believe that he does have his ways of letting us know that our prayers are being heard. If anything at all it was just a reassurance that I should just enjoy my senior year and not be so paranoid about the whole process (as I’m sure would be good advice to most of us), because it will all work out in the end.

I am sorry about you having had to go through those hard times but in no way, shape, or form did I mean my comment in a negative or sarcastic way.

I actually mentioned this to my Harvard interviewer 2 weeks ago and she though it was a quite humorous story and did not find offense to it in any way.

Anyways I’m sorry if I insulted anybody with this post but good luck you all with your decisions!

Forgive me but I don’t quite understand the relationship between that phrase and 9/11. Are you referring to a fanatical religious justification by the attackers?

Gibby, chill out. Learn some humor.
@ivegothope-That was hilarious. But as a Christian, I do believe God comes through. Not in ways we always want though. That’s the twist with it. I love your attitude by the way. The way you believe God is directing you towards the college with the best fit, and not the college you crave. I believe that the religious and non-religious alike should try to get in the “Wherever college I will thrive in mindset” rather than the “I Must go to college XYZ or I’ll die”.

I feel much closer to Gibby’s view on this one (maybe it’s an adult vs. a student perspective?). I think to suggest that God is speaking to you about a college decision through fortune cookies smacks of hubris and I don’t find it funny.

Nonetheless, good luck to the OP. It sounds like you already have some great choices.

Gibby what’s the problem? …9.11…God…?

I think the person said they were joking…funny story, and we know God probably doesn’t care about fortune cookies most likely, unless you’re choking on one.

Two L-L’s…wow. :)

^^ The hijackers that brought down the World Trade Towers thought God was speaking to them as well. As midatimon said, I think it’s an adult vs. student perspective – and even though the OP said his message was “from a fortune cookie”, I just don’t find it funny.

I guess some are just superstitious… most likely the 2 months can apply to any situation. Most of us probably have something important going on in April! :p

@ivegothope Congrats to you. You won’t go wrong with either Columbia or Dartmouth. May the Good Lord continue to shower good fortune through cookies on you.

As an parent of a HS Student, I found ivegothope and many of the posts on the lighter side of life while these kids are going through the stressful process of college selection. When I find a particular forum thread offensive I stay away from it and let those that like the lighter side of life live their life. I for one refuse to give up the phrase “God spoke to me” to some 9/11 religious zealots. Each of us have the right to have God speak to us in any manner shape or form.

At the end of the day “FAITH” is what is important.

@JamieBrown Thank you for cracking me up with your remark. That was hilarious! :)

Without making assumptions about his religious tradition, most forms of Christianity believe in a God that is in some way communicative. “Fortune cookie” or not, I don’t think a comparison of his interpretation to the mentality of the 9/11 hijackers is warranted in any way, shape, or form.

Maybe it is a “parent vs student” thing, but I personally find said comparison vastly more offensive than this kid’s fortune cookie situation.

Gibby, not everybody knows what the phrase means personally to you, or a New Yorker. I’m sorry you went through that, but to me, it is a very normal phrase that seems to have nothing to do with the event.

Well well well I seem to have sparked quite a bit of controversy. Let me try and clarify. The joking part was if anybody actually interpreted my original post as saying “yeah God says I’m getting accepted” (notably because I posted under the Harvard thread). I was not seriously saying that divine intervention sent down a decision two months early. The “God speaking to me” part you can interpret as you may. Like I said, the Lord speaks in mysterious ways. Whether or not you find a fortune cookie offensive please elaborate as how else I would get an early sign that I should ease my mind? All I’m saying is that for me personally, I felt more at ease after much praying about it and having that small bit of comic reassurance. Thanks for those of you who understand me and appreciate my story. :)

I like this story. It’s sweet. :)

Let us know what happens.

@ivegothope The Very Best Wishes to you. Thanks for the chuckles during these stressful times.

Since I’m the parent of Ivegothope, I will say that I find his attitude refreshing. He, along with many other HS students at this time, has been under a tremendous amount of stress. I thought the fortune cookie was great and whether you believe that God communicates through a fortune cookie or not is not important. What is important is that he believes that God hears his prayers and is involved in his life. My S has always been an optimist and I love the faith he has in his creator. Good luck to all… by the way, he found out two days ago that he jumped in ranking and is the current Val of his class… up from Sal. Maybe his “good fortune” is coming a little early. Anyway, thanks for the well wishes and best of luck to all. God Bless.
