Going greek?

You hear a lot of things.

A lot of fraternities do some pretty ridiculous stuff. I’m not gonna report any of the stuff I hear to the greek life office at my school because I think that you know what you’re getting into with a fraternity and you can quit anytime you want but I would never join a fraternity based on the rumors and stories I’ve heard.

how do you know which one is right for you?

A kid at Chico State died a couple years ago hazing. Not sure why I decided to point this out.

Ha, those r basically the three stories I’ve heard, and two r from the same fraternity. The elephant walk may not have happened but the other two def did

On the other hand, if greek life is right for you, don’t let these stories discourage you from joining. There are some great opportunities from greek life.

I just choose not to join because I don’t think it’s a fit for me.

Well, it depends on the fraternity, but you will go through some sort of hazing for a majority of them. It can be anything from physical to mental to emotional, however, a majority of brothers do not want their pledges to get hurt, they just want to bring the pledges together. Pledgeship is meant to bring pledges together and for them to rely on one another. At times you will want to quit, but let your pledge brothers know. If you do talk to them they will try to help you out, if not maybe you should quit. Bids vary from school to school I guess. At my school the rush week is three nights of dinner, then a no contact night (never the case) and then the night you formally decide which fraternity you are joining. Leading up to rush will be various activities from parties to dinners to poker games to getting together to watch football. Rush and pre-rush depends on the fraternity and the school.

Engineering + Greek = Bad Idea?

^I know people who do both. It all comes down to your ability to manage your time wisely.

two kids in my pledge class where engineering and math/physics majors and another was just an engineer major. One finished with a 4.0 and the others i know had at least 3.5s.

pledging is so ■■■■■■■■. I mean you basically have to do stupid **** to make frat boys like you and have to rememberr stuff about them and past pledge classes. I mean how can you do well in school when you get no sleep due to pledging, have to remember stuff about former pledge classes (like studying but names/nicknames). I thought about pledging the “coolest” frat at my school but I decided against it bc its stupid. I mean do you want to start school off with a bad gpa bc you had to get into a fraternity. I mean I talked to a lot of people and most people that join frats don’t do well (not at an elite ivy school tho so this is probably why). I also had a friend that depledged this frat, and basically will not go to frat partys bc hes scared to see brothers who will not talk to him or acknowledge him. Also another one of my friends did coke after joining a frat. Most frats have drugs involved (obv not all) but seriously why get pressured to do drugs?

I always thought about considering greek but towards the middle of my senior year I started to focus more on other things. Now, once again looking at these numbers I just don’t see how I could not consider greek. The numbers are astonishing, and I only hear about all the benifits of joining a fraternity. If I can find a greek house where I think I and the members are alike I definately would consider.

Oh wow, yeah why get pressured to do drugs. Though bad grades? How could this be when looking at all the presidents and high officals who were in a fraternity. I am sure most get good grades and it seem like there is great networking. I do agree, if your putting effort towards a fraternity and your grades are not good then you definately should concentrate on schooling.
Also, here is another fact listed by the Iowa fraternity community:
· Higher GPA and greater graduation rate than the all male average across America.

@JkPoker: I thought you said you were in a fraternity.

Rush week at my school is the second week of the Fall.

umm JKpoker, just because you have an issue with fraternities doesn’t mean you need to trash and generalize about all fraternities. The memorization things are about testing the pledge, to see if they are willing to commit themselves. I never once did anything stupid, and sleep derived I was not. I will say fraternities are not for everyone but if you find the right people it is a great choice.

^ I’m guessing you’re a Pikapp. They have a pretty good rep at my school.

I won’t disclose which fraternity i am in, but pikapp has a good rep at my school as well

hahaha i think the PKP gives it away :)

but I agree. I’m sick of fraternity members bashing non-fraternity members, and non-fraternity members bashing fraternity members at my school. Everybody chooses differently and we should just leave it at that.

I really dislike that as well

One thing to think about is how many fraternity members end up in the Fortune 500 or whatever. I’m not denying the benefits of greek life networking (nor am I bashing greek life) but it’s just something to think about.

I can’t really see myself in a fraternity. I imagine it to be a bunch of guys who love having huge groups of friends… I’m a bit more introverted than extroverted, and as such I don’t really have a big group of friends, just a small but incredibly tight-knit gang as it were.
