Hey guys I really love business and money management and that kind of stuff and also love Duke’s academic atmosphere but noticed that Duke doesn’t really have too much in terms of business majors (though it does have a finance minor) so I was wondering what degree might best prepare me for a finance career. I’m also contemplating an engineering degree as I’m very strong in math (like I’m sure everyone else is too…) which could be useful with finance. What are your thoughts?
Economics with a certificate in markets and management studies (or finance minor). But any quantitative major (statistics, economics, math, engineering) as you mentioned would cut it as long as you demonstrate interest in finance.
Many, many, many seniors annually enter the best commercial/consulting/iBanking/entrepreneurial/financial/managerial firms from Duke; these enterprises want SMART graduates of the very best schools, a business major (per se) is absolutely unnecessary. To illustrate this, LOTS of Pratt BSE are among those who do so.
Do you think any particular engineering field would be best to later go into finance? Personally I’m leaning towards computer and electrical but also like mechanical.
Any engineering field is probably fine. Doing engineering demonstrates that you are smart to these companies regardless of the type pretty much. As @Jwest22 was saying, econ with MMS is a good choice. Duke was ranked by somebody (although I forget who), as having the best undergraduate econ department in the country. Take that as a grain of salt but econ is strong at duke

USA Today within the last year, but I agree that ALL rankings should be digested with an unhealthy amount of salt.
