Going to back to Japan or staying at NYU before I apply for transfer.

Hey guys, I posted this yesterday:

"Hi, im a freshman at NYU right now from Japan. I thought I was going to like the place, but unfortunately, I realized that the city is really killing me so i'm considering a transfer. I have two options. One is to apply now, the other is to apply a year from now after brining up my GPA. what do you guys think?

Highschool: One of the best New England boarding prep schools in the nation.
GPA: 3.2 (went abroad for a term to Mexico my senior winter, took all classes in Spanish at a Mexican private school and that really killed my GPA).
SAT: M800 V660 640
SAT II (dont remember)
course load: very tough, many ap courses.
ECs: student counselor, head of japanese-american society, environmental proctor (in dorms), varsity soccer/lacrosse, volunteering at hospital, summer intern at an importing company, amusement park translator, English tutor, and a little more.

College: NYU (CAS)
GPA First term: 3.1 (A+ for my writing seminar, i messed up calculus..)
This term: realized I really want to get out of here, all As so far in all my papers/tests
ECs: Assistant to East Asian Studies Librarian 20hrs/week, japanese club.

I used to be good at/enjoy math and science before, but recently I've been much more interested/getting better grades in humanities. I'm currently a Journalism + Econ major, but I'm not 100% sure about it.

Schools I want to apply as transfer:

Rice, Emory, Northwestern, Wesleyan, WashU in St. Louis, Boston College, Johns Hopkins, Tufts, Notre Dame, Carnegie Mellon, Vassar, Williams, Pomona, Tufts, Amherst, Vanderbilt, Georgetown, UPenn, Cornell.

I'm still narrowing the list down, and I know I don't have much of a shot especially with my first term grades, but are there any in the list that you guys think I might have a little chance if I keep up my grades this term and write amazing essays? Or do I have no chance unless I wait a year and really bring my GPA up?

Thanks so much for the help."

So I just asked this question yesterday, and I got some helpful advise. I'm planning on applying next year, but the question I have now is, until I apply for colleges next year, should I go back to Japan and enroll in a Japanese college (one of the best in Japan, I got in last year so I think I have a decent shot again), or should I stay at NYU. I feel like i will get much better grades if I go back to Japan, but that would mean I will be transferring 3 times. is that bad? Also, how good do you think NYU's name brand might be compared to one of the top schools in Japan? (Waseda University, btw). I know this is a unique and tough question, but any thoughts will be great. Thanks a lot.

i think you really need to do some introspection, dont get me wrong but we cant really help you any more than you can
there are tons of factors such as money and how much you really dont like it there, its your life - you have to live it day by day
i also think you need to really truly figure out what you want to major in so you can find a few schools and really sell yourself to them. i personally can take a look at your list and immediately cut it into a third. and college credits dont transfer easily, however, i dont think it would look bad if you went to a school in japan as opposed to another american one (and then transferred again)

ps i think its almost hilarious how nyu seems to be notorious for having students who really do not like it. i dont know what it is, the one thing that bothered me about them is their lack of aid.
I think you should STAY at nyu but you should find a few schools to try out and ultimately plan on returning next year. then you can atleast personalize the applications b/c you really are running out of time as far as making a decision. you could also factor in whether or not they have hefty core requirements because that would make it that much more of a pain as a junior transfer. and your gpa is not awful! i have seen a few 3.3s get into schools like brown

Hi Defrasne thanks so much for your advise. I was just curious, in what way did you cut my list into a third? I obviously am going to think for my own sake, but I was just curious. Also, about applying this year to a few schools that I really like, do you think if I don't get in this year, I would be worse off next year if I apply to the same schools again? thats my main fear for not applying this year. thanks so much

Hi, I'm also disliking NYU and looking to transfer.

I think it might be confusing to other colleges if you went from NYU to Waseda U, and then tried to transfer after that. However, if you really can't stand being at NYU, then you should consider going to the university in Japan or even taking a leave of absence.
