Going to college as a special needs student

Do you commute to school every day or do you live at school?

@thumper1 oh yeah i see now that i left social studies out sorry

i go to school everyday, i’m there right now

So, you commute?

yes @Bill_Marsh

Thanks. I understand better now.

If you’re open to a different part of the country, you might look at Lynn University in Florida.

i’m not sure about that

Hi Rose,

Are you sitting for the regents exams?
or
Does your school do portfolio assessments?

What kind of diploma will you receive when you graduate; Regents, Local, certification?

@sybbie719 i’m not sure

You need to find out if you will be doing a portfolio assessment or the regents. Ask at your school.

And ask what kind of diploma you are currently slated to receive.

yea i know

Hi – I know the leadership at Vermont’s Agency that provides services to youth and adults with disabilities who want to pursue college and/or employment. They are literally the best agency across the US. Many of their yout clients take classes at Community College of Vermont (for degrees or after). They are much more organized than the agency in NY (AccessVR). Contact them and tell them your needs. Feel free to ping me if you need help. Here is the website Contact Us - HireAbility

oh! yeah i know about them, they were supposed to come to my school and talk to me but they never did. @Psevak

As I noted earlier it is time for you to do the work if you are serious about attending college. This process will take determination and perseverance on your part. It is time to take the initiative – don’t wait for people/resources to come to you. Ask for your parent’s help if needed.

–Talk to your guidance counselor and understand what type of diploma you will get upon graduation. Find out what coursework you will need (if any) to be eligible and prepared to attend college. If you need additional coursework discuss options where you can take any required courses.
–Think about why you want to attend college and what you may want to study.
–Contact the Vermont agency listed above. Don’t wait for them to come to you.
–If you have had neropsych tests/academic tests in the past (either at your school or privately) see if they can be updated. You want to understand where you are to assess what type of college options could work best.

@rose_23 please contact them directly! they try to connect with each school but it is a collaboration with schools and them. It sounds like your school is a bit lacking!

honestly i wanna do all this stuff but im nervous for some reason

Can you ask your parents for support?

@Psevak could it be that this vermont agency doesn’t go to NY located schools? This student attends high school in NY state.

We all get nervous when faced with this kind of stuff. Hang tough! :triumph:

Yes, though I think they are mandated to serve people that live or go to school in Vermont. The Vermont agency is unlikely to visit schools in NY. But the folks I have worked with there have been really responsive and youth have had great outcomes (employment and school)
