Going to Hopkins?

Hey everyone! Congrats to those of you who were accepted! I'm about 93.78% sure I'm going to Hopkins next year, and if anyone else who is feeling the same way cares, let's get to know each other a bit more...

I'm from an all girls school in Connecticut (I know, I know, it made me cringe to think about it before I went, too), play volleyball (and might try out at Hopkins), like chemistry and physics and am planning to major in chemical/biomolecular engineering.

Hey ChemEng!

I’m from Massachusetts, so we’re neighbors! I’m also about 95% sure I’m going to Hopkins next year and if I do will also be majoring in chemical and biomolecular engineering. It seems we have a lot in common! The 5% of me that’s not sure I’ll be attending Hopkins is afraid that Hopkins will be a negative college experience due to all the pessimistic posts I’ve seen from current students on various websites.

So if any JHU student sees this, I’m really interested in hearing your prospective on your time at Hopkins.

hey there, got into hopkins
i’m italian, my anticipated major is journalism
i also got into nyu and bu… but i think jhu subdues them all
penny for yer thoughts!

I am a current hopkins student. I rarely get on this site but I decided to get back on because I heard that decisions were released this week. I am very happy with hopkins and I could introduce you to tons more people that love it too. These online forums don’t represent the average student at any school. Most people get in, have a good time, and never look back on websites like this. The complaints you read are from those few people that aren’t having a good time who need to vent. After all, it’s rare to find someone who will go on these sites all the time just to reassure people that their school doesn’t suck. People are much more likely to get on here and complain.

If you have done your research and you think a school is a good fit, then go there and make the most of it.

I’m /really/ leaning towards Hopkins right now over Emory which is my other choice for college.

Hopkins seems to have better pre-med advising, research oppurtunities (even if Emory has the CDC + Yerkes), and school spirit.

However, Emory gave me a better financial package for four years, where’as Hopkins is slightly better but only for one year. But if I get the Woodrow Wilson Fellowship, then I would definitely go to Hopkins.

@AhManSuuuuure: Also I don’t know about the difficulty of the classes at Hopkins compared to Emory. I know Hopkins has non-existent grade inflation, but what about /deflation/?

Just a few observations from current hopkins student:

every school has pros and cons.

admissions tours usually only show the positive aspects (which is understandable)

it’s really up to you to achieve what you want to do or what you want to become. external factors are just subjective excuses used by some people.

it may be a challenge to start your own student organizations or getting any sort of approval with the school administration. the bureaucratic network would drive anybody crazy even if you are trying to accomplish the simplest tasks (e.g. getting their stamps of approval for something as trivial as a flyer for your weekly chess club meeting…). some bureaucrats simply think that anyone who asks them for help is disrupting their routine schedule. simply ridiculous, to say the least.

some professors are very nice and some are more strict. as the student, you just have to go with flow and play by the rules.

network. network. network. although 4 years seem like a long time, you’d be surprised that by the time you get to the 2nd semester of sophomore year of how close you are to graduation. network with alumni, professors, TAs, friends, professional associations, friends of professors, friends of alumni, parents of friends of alumni, colleague of the friend of the alum’s father…anyway you get the point. talk to them. ask questions about future careers and opportunities. ask for help. don’t be shy cuz everyone has to go through this at some point in their life.

Just to give you an example. Recently our student organization hosted a networking reception specifically designated for undergrad students. We advertised our event aggressively to undergrad students trying to convince them the importance of meeting an talking to alumni and establishing long term relationships. At the event, only 1 freshmen and 3 juniors showed up. Over 50 grad students somehow came as well (even though we didn’t advertise to them at all). Later I asked why undergrads won’t come. most of my undergrad friends gave me self-serving excuses (e.g. I always sleep in on Saturday morning…i won’t go unless they offered me a job…it conflicts with my study routine…i’ll only go if there’s free food…). Turns out that the people who did show up not only established great relationships with our alumni speakers, but also were offered contact info where they could send their resumes to get direct job and summer internship interviews in some very competitive companies.

Thanks for the advice, Jimmy

Oh wow, that’s awesome advice!
well, my name is Dillon, I’m a Texan
I will be visiting JHU next week and that will make my decision final! Lol
So…I’m from a small-ish town in Texas. I’ll be graduating with like 200. I plan to major in biology, and I want to go into surgery. :)

Hi  I was accepted to JHU and I’m sure I’m attending the school~
I’m an international student (currently living in Peru) and I’m Japanese.
Been living outside of Japan for most of my life, and totally excited to be a part of Hopkins!

Can’t wait to meet all of these people on college confidential in person in Hopkins :)

Have you guys joined the enrolled student group on facebook yet?

i already sent in a request to join…i guess it takes a while

I’m definitely going to Hopkins next year (:.
I’m from Connecticut, writing seminars major. Can’t wait to meet everyone!

I’ll be going to Hopkins next year too as a Public Health Studies major (for now)! From CA

Anyone know whats up with the enrolled students facebook group? They aren’t accepting my request, haha!

apparently it takes a while to process the whole deposit business so it’s gonna take a while for them to accept the request for the fb group  I sent my request like ages ago and they still haven’t accepted it so :(

Yeah I know! (about the fb thing). I sent in my deposit at mason hall on admitted students day, but they still havent accepted my fb request even though i’ve tried like twice lol! yeah i guess patience is key

I’m 99% sure that I’ll be coming to JHU (still waiting on Harvard…oh waitlists). The Open House was awesome. I came a day early to sit in on a class and tour the campus. It was such a worthwhile visit; being at JHU convinced me to go off the waitlists for MIT and CalTech because I liked it so much there.

I’m officially going to Hopkins as of yesterday!!! I committed! haha I was really excited :D

Congrats to all!!
