C of C has been one of my top schools so far, and I just wanted to hear what other people like and/or dislike about this school.
Although, one problem is that I am not sure if this school fits me academically. I'm the type of student who likes to have some freedom when learning instead of doing labs all day and being stuck in a classroom. I also have a 32 ACT and a 4.33 GPA (on a 5.2 scale)

The Honors College is really competitive and challenging. CofC is my top school, I’ll be applying there soon. I’ve gone on a few visits and I’m very impressed each time, especially with the caliber of learning at the Honors College. I have similar ideas and pretty much the same academic standing as you (except my school is on a different scale.) Based on my observations and those of people that I’ve talked to who are enrolled there, I’d say the best things are close relationships with the professors, overall enviorment, and opportunities (abroad included.) The worst things in my opinion are lack of diversity and outdated dorms. Hope this helps

I am a rising junior and love CofC! I was accepted early action to CofC with a 4.4 gpa and an ACT of 30 (I didn’t send my SAT).

I like that the school is a little bit more laid back. It’s nice to not have to compete against your classmates, but actually work with them. I also like that all of my professors have been willing to help you during office hours whether it’s reviewing for an exam or reading a rough draft of your paper. Even if I don’t need help I’ve found it is beneficial to go see a professor at least once or twice a semester (brownie points never hurt)! You can’t beat Charleston in terms of a college town. There are so many restaurants for when you get sick of Liberty food, bars, comedy clubs, sporting events (college and city), farmer’s markets, art fairs, the beach… you really can’t get bored. The ‘city’ is also great when you’re looking for an internship (many majors/minors require them) because there are so many businesses here. I also like that CofC is constantly expanding and bettering itself. Our performing arts center just got renovated and expanded. Our library, Addlestone, is fairly new and the Science Center accross the street was just completed spring 2010.

On the downside, it gets VERY hot during spring/fall which makes walking to class miserable. Another downside is that CofC is not racially diverse and the girl/guy ratio is very skewed. My last complaint about CofC is that there’s less school spirit than my high school (and schools like Alabama, Clemson, UGA…). Students go to basketball games (we beat UNC last year!!) and some baseball and soccer games but sports aren’t a huge deal here.

I wouldn’t say the dorms are outdated (besides Lodge). Most of them have wireless internet with George St. Apartments and Liberty dorms having been built within the last 5 years. A cool thing about the dorms is that you can view laundry room machine availability online before you haul all your stuff downstairs - just to find there all being used!

Thanks you all! these reviews have been very helpful. I just have a couple more questions/comments. First, about the girl/guy ratio: I know that there is a military Citadel also in Charleston. Do students at CofC interact with them much, i.e. out in the streets? That might help the ratio since there are more men that go there than women. Also, I was wondering what you all meant by not diverse. Do you mean racially, academically, globally (where they come from within the country/world), etc? I know I’m being really picky and specific, but I just want to know all of my facts before making any decisions. Last, I am also wondering if it is better to apply undeclared. I know some areas that I want to go into (Anthropology, Art History, etc), but I am not sure which one I actually want to major in. For this reason, I am not sure if I should just go in undecided.
