I'm a CoE admitted student and here I freshen the PC vs. Mac topic based on my need to purchase a new laptop for academic use.

Yes, I've heard most engineering students go with PCs. Would you help me explaining why? I've been interested in Objective-C programming lately, and I need good reasons to stick to the Windows platform right now.

I enjoy my Windows based machine, but in a day like today it really doesn’t matter. If there is something that only runs on windows, you have two options (as a mac user) 1. Run windows on your mac. or 2. use a CAEN machine or virtual site.

What about the engineering softwares compatibility? Does the fact that most of them (and how important are they?) are based on Windows really put PCs over Macs?

Macs have very few advantages over PCs considering they’re about twice as expensive for similar specs. If you have a ton of extra money, a Mac is fine since you can always dual boot, and they are great computers (just overpriced).

Not all pieces of software run on mac OS. Some pieces of software only run on linux. I know that you can boot windows up on some macs, and logically that sounds like it would solve the compatibility problem. The university also offers a suite of virtual sites that let you log into a windows desktop remotely to utilize software. Let me just say, though that all engineering computer labs that I’ve seen have solely Windows based machines.
