Hi, I'm just about to start my sophomore year and I was wondering what rowing camps would be good for me to get noticed by Ivy coaches? I don't really have much an idea of how to get started so any tips that can help me along the way would really help! Thanks.

i would suggest going to whichever college you’re interested in… for Ivy coaches, go to Ivy camps, or find out where their coaching this summer. Princeton has a camp, Dmouth has a camp, Harvard (Charles River Rowing Camp), Yale (Bulldog), Penn has one I think… and I don’t know about Columbia or Cornell.

Make sure that when you go to camp you’re in shape! Very important. But PM me if you want - im being recruited right now or rowing. These camps helped me a lot when I sent my initial email. Good Luck! :)

Last summer I went to the sparks camp and I thought it was the best camp I’d been to… I went to northeast and yale before. sparks was good because there was a lot of coaches and it was a good opportunity to get to know them and there was a ton of private time… plus, it was just fun - it was a good group.

Congrats on being recruited for rowing!!! It must be an exciting and crazy busy time. I assume you are a senior? I’m a sophomore girl who would like to be recruited for Ivy League rowing. Can you tell me how you went about it – especially this junior/senior summer you just had – did you go to those 1 week August camps at your favorite 1 or 2 schools? Do you have likely letter or confirmed stuff in writing from the coach AND the AO yet? Is it possible to have a choice (ie 2 likely letters?).

Can you tell me how you went about it – especially this junior/senior summer you just had – did you go to those 1 week August camps at your favorite 1 or 2 schools? Did you go to camps after both your sophomore and junior years or just when you were most advanced after your junior year? Do you have likely letter or confirmed stuff in writing from the coach AND the AO at this time of the year? Is it possible to have a choice (ie 2 likely letters?) say at Ivies without ED?

This thread reads like one long advertisement for a particular camp/consulting group…since most posters have 1-2 posts …

I’m just new to this site (hence my first post here yesterday), but I hope I can get some help and insights to this whole athletic recruiting process from kids a year or two ahead of me – or any college coaches who might be here!

Attend one of the ID camp sponsored by US rowing. If Your stats are good enough for them, They will contact You. My D was contacted by a couple of Ivy coaches, along with a lot of other schools, based on her stats at the camp.

thank you! can one just go to one of those USRowing day erg things without being invited? Is that the “camp” of which you are speaking? Congrats to your daughter – that is exactly would I would like to have happen – get recruited for Ivies (my grades are great/scores too, but nothing is a slam dunk these days!). I row year round here with my very competitive HS program as a tall lightweight.

tallgirl: Totally just out of curiosity, what is considered tall for a lightweight? I have a 14 year old who wants to row LW in high school, and we are curious - thank you!

To Tall Girl:
What is your erg time? As a LW, you want to be under 7:45 to be in the recruitable range. Also, the only ivy leagues that have women’s LW rowing are Princeton and Harvard (plus Stanford). Some HW coaches will also recruit a fast LW, but, again, your erg score is what counts. To see how fast the top LW rowers are, go to the CrashB web site.

For info on USRowing ID camps, etc. go to usrowingjrs.org - usrowingjrs Resources and Information.; You can also send in your erg scores at USRowing (junior national team testing). However, keep in mind that the cut-off times do not adjust for your lower weight.

fogfog, we can appreciate the rational on your comment - though that’s not us!

We do believe we have good camps - that said, we would also say many parents miscalculate the importance of any 5 day camp in the recruiting process. Rowing is not LAX or soccer in terms of talent ID or the way its summer camp system works. One Ivy coach recently told us he has never recruited a single camper from his institution’s camp, and it’s not because they’re not well recognized or fast!

We try to debunk the common misperceptions about rowing camps at www.rowingcamps.com
