what are some good colleges for computer science? Some good safety, target, and reach school… I know it depends on specific academic achievements but in general what are some good colleges and universities to major in computer science?
There are tons of good CS schools. What other qualifications are you looking for? Size? Location? That would help the forum to give better suggestions.
OP, I hear that MIT is good fir CS? Are you good enough for MIT?
We need more information about you!
I like schools that are large with many different opportunities and extra curricular activities. I also want schools that aren’t too far away from home. I live in the New England area. I wouldn’t go past TX. My grades aren’t horrible but they aren’t the best either. I have a 3.5/3.6 gpa and my sats currently are at a 1910 but I plan to improve them. I recently took the ACT and am waiting for the results. Even though my grades aren’t stellar i have other things that I can put on my application to make it better!! And I’m take very hard class at a very good high school (it’s a blue ribbon high school). I’ve been to many competitions and I’ve even gone to the national level…I play a sport (varsity since freshman year) and etc. I will have every good recommendations letters because my teachers know me very well. I will have taken a total of 6 APs when finished with high school. I also plan to do an internship over the summer.
UMass Amherst is good for CS and it would be a high match for you.
are there any better colleges out there? what would some target and reach schools be?
What you and your parents can afford is important, particularly for safeties.
Price is not an issue
I want to know more target and reach more than safeties
UIUC CS (quality program. Easily top 5 in USA. Though average INCOMING students in CS tend to have 34 ACT score and more than 9/10 drop out of major over time xD)
UW Madison (CS quality is tie with Caltech for grad school and is one of most heavily recruited undergrad cs and is relatively easy to get in though for OOS…)
U Maryland - College Park (Government recruits most here and Johns Hopkins)
Purdue (safety ish although I hear almost no one can graduate within even six years due to the huge disparity between quality of students and quality of program)
Although I must say with your GPA and test scores, it is a rather high reach place for you considering all are OOS
Plus tuitions increase
That being said your instate is probably your best bet
I mean you have subpar SAT and GPA. Plus CS is a rather non prestige field
btw
I saw you post about ivies in CS. Frankly, with your scores, without EC out of this world, you really have no chance and if u do miraculously get accepted, you won’t be able to follow ur class rigor (and fyi, ivies might be weak in engineering but they are relatively powerful at CS)
CS is a non prestige field. Anyways, I highly suggest you pick a school in overall rankings as undergrad. Most people give up CS after first year and tbh, I think the hype recently is overrated
I’m throwing in NCSU and Georgia Tech.
Is unc chapel hill good for cs?
And thank you all for the options and advice
@cs1117, UNC-CH is good for everything. It is even better at Business and Medicine, so an CS graduate with a business minor from Chapel Hill would be highly marketable. In my own bias, NCSU has better a CS and Engineering program then UNC-CH and many will agree with me. In my experience with my family, If you are going to be a Doctor,Lawyer,Professor,Politician,Misc go to UNC. If you want to be a Engineering or CS professional go to NCSU.
Are there any other schools that I could consider bc I want to know all the options i have? Also im looking to get into and Ivy but I just want to know which one is the best out of all them for a cs major
@cs1117, I would definitely say MIT is a high reach but would be worth looking at. As well Florda University system, UNC Charlotte and NYU, Also, As another poster said, CS is not a prestige major so you can actually choose what school you like best and if they have CS go to them. That said Harvard or Brown on your Diploma definitely wouldn’t hurt.
What about University of Texas at Austin? They have a top 10 CS program or Texas A&M University which places the CS major under the engineering wing? UT has a high out of state tuition (50k-55k) but Texas A&M is only about 37k out of state and both have really good programs. I have also heard Georgia Tech and Duke have pretty good programs.
What do you mean when you say “CS is a non prestige major” and why? What would you call a prestige major?
You must have replied to the thread. I’m new and I think CS is a great major
post #17, I think posters mean the major does not require a prestige university. Ivy university is not necessary. That’s my interpretation.
